Network diagram :
http://s9.imagehosting.us/uploadpoin...-1_1648836.jpg

Hi everybody,

Im having some problems setting up my home network and im hoping
someone can help me out.

My set up as descibred in the diagram : One Windows XP pc and an Ubuntu
server connected to a switch, a cable modem/router with dhcp also
connected to the same switch, providing both the PC and the Server with
an internet IP adrress.

i can reach the router via the local ip adrress 192.168.100.1 but there
is not much i can configure on it.

On the server i have ftp server running and if i connect to it via the
pc it takes the route via the internet. (the long way obviosly), Now my
question is how can i set it up that it takes the shortest
route.(directly through the switch)

can anyone help me?

How are you addressing the local server to connect to it? You probably
either need use the LAN IP of the server, make an entry in /etc/hosts of
client (or HOSTS file in Windows) pointing name to server's local IP, or
properly configure local DNS to point the name to private IP of the
server.

I have the very same setup but works without leaving the LAN!
If you have dhcp enabled on the router then all nodes' IP addresses
should end up with 192.168.xxx.xxx not 83.XXX etc. Perhaps dhcp is not
enabled at the router or the PCs are setup with static IP?

Looks like you're paying for two IP addresses from your ISP.
Go buy a cheap router such as Linksys BESFR41 and set your PCs up
with local IP addresses (192.168.x.x).

The part that confuses me is why his LAN machines are using IPs in the
83.86.100.0 network instead of in the 192.168.100.0 one. Was that a
typo? Assuming it is (i.e PC is 192.168.100.1 and Linux box is
192.168.100.2), then we have another typo: XP and router would have same
IP. Since he is running a DHCP server in the router, I think that would
not be the case. So, next question is what is the netmask for the XP and
linux boxes? If it is 255.255.255.0, it should not bother the router
unless they want specifically to talk to it. Shouldn't the switch also
not propagate traffic between the two PCs to the router? It sounds like
something might be boink with the router.
