As is clear, I am new to computer networking so please forgive my
ignorance.

I am trying to network 2 desktop base units together which only sit
about 1 metre or so apart and because of this, a cable network seems
more sensible than a wireless network. I also use a NTL cable modem
that uses an ethernet connection.

I have considered 2 ways of doing this networking:

1 - buying a 4 port ethernet hub costing £40 -£50 and then connecting
the base units and modem to it with patch cables.
Or
2 - connecting the base units together using crossover cables going
from one ethernet port to the other. While plugging in the cable modem
to my USB instead of the ethernet port - doing this I understand makes
my internet connection slower.

I am looking for the best way of making this network work and any
advice and suggestions would be most appreciated as the 1st way is
quite expensive while the 2nd way slows down my internet connection

Many thanks
Conrad

4 port router hooked up to the NTL Cable Modem. If you go the crossover
cable route, the computer with the NTL Cable Modem on has to be turned
on for the other to have internet access.

-> A router is as cheap as your hub, and also connects up to 4 devices
directly.
As long as you get a device with an Ethernet "WAN" port you plug it into the
cable modem
i have a Netgear WGR614 which works OK (it also has wireless) - but there
are lots of other makes with similar featues.

see if there are other add ons you want/need - the ones i would have liked
were a print server and built in disk to act as a file server - but i
couldnt get all the features on a single appliance / box at a sensible
price.......

you will have to register the new MAC address on your NTL account

Many thanks

I would buy one for a tenner instead.

But you need a router for sharing the ethernet cable connection.
