Are you using DHCP?
What IP addresses are being assigned?
Are you running any firewalls?

I think ZoneAlarm has been known to cause problems even when disabled -
not sure if it's been fixed in a later version as I use Kerio which i
sbetter.

DHCP is Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - i.e. automatic address
allocation. What addresses are the machines being assigned?

Just found DHCP is enabled. Checking ip adress via ipconfig is Ethernet
adaptor local area connection 4 Ip address 82.40.28.225
Ethernet adaptor Network bridge ip address is 192.168.0.1.
These are on host comp,on bedroom comp autoconfig ip addresss is
169.254.126.159.
Hope this is waht your looking for

Okay, that means that the bedroom machine can't see the DHCP server on
the other machine, so it's guessing an address. You would expect it to
be allocated 192.168.0.2 or similar. I suspect that ZA is screwing
things up, but I'm afraid I can't tell you how to configure it. You need
to set it so that it allows all traffic on 192.168.0.0 (netmask
255.255.255.0).

ditch ZA completely. Uninstall it. Once you've got the network running, try
reinstalling ZA again and see if it ruins the network. My experience is that
firewalls are more trouble than they're worth. I once tried to setup a
network, nothing would work until I nuked ZA. Keep posting your progress,
hope you get the network running.

Is your experience only with ZA? There _are_ decent software firewalls
available, and I think even ZA can be bullied into working if you know
what to do.

Try manual configuration just to get the computers to talk to each other
Then set the addresses to 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, netmask
255.255.255.0
On each machine run "ping 127.0.0.1" to make sure the network card is
working. Then "ping 192.168.0.1" and "ping 192.168.0.2" to see if they
can see their own network address and the other machine.
