Home network/file sharing problem

We have 3 Win98SE computers: MOM, DAD and KIDS. Each has
a DWL-122 USB adapter. They talk thru DI-514 router /
switch which is from there connected via ethernet cable to
Motorolla cable modem. All 3 can get to internet, not
mattering whether any of the others is up or not. MOM can
get to DAD and KIDS, but neither KIDS nor DAD can get to
MOM. She can't be found (even as she is getting to the
other two). DAD and KIDS can get to each other. They are
all in the workgroup FAMILY, have file and print sharing
implemented the same and have all other set-up identical.
We use Windows Family logon as default network logon
(somehow Client for Microsoft Networks as default meant NO-
ONE could get to anyone else). We let IP and SUBnet be
assigned automatically. No gateway, or DNS, is defined.
And DHCP is chosen. No WINS. No personal firewall. MOM
originally had ICS installed and enabled, but it has since
been uninstalled. BTW, DAD and KIDS used to be able to
get to MOM, even with ICS enabled, but now they can't.
Anyone have any ideas? And don't tell me to get XP -- the
ultimate spyware.

Hey, I got it all working. The problem was that KIDS and
DAD had 255.0.0.0 in subnet mask. I had it set to
automatically get the config. I guess something was wrong
with that. I manually set the values, put values in DNS
and default gateway, (DHCP got disabled by doing it
manually), and set default network logon to client for MS
network. My only problem is that I still have to do a
Find for each computer I want to get to. No computer will
see any other just by opening Windows Explorer/Network
Neighborhood (or by clicking there from the desktop).
Under Network Neighborhood appears Entire Network, but no
computers appear under that. Clicking on Entire Network
gives a message saying the network is unavailable (even
though I can do a Find and Explore or Open and get to the
other PCs.) I did set up MOM and KIDS to be administered
by DAD. Anyway, it's almost fully successful now. All I
need to do is figure out how to get Windows
Explorer/Network Neighborhood to automatically find the
shares. I haven't done any "Map Network Drive" yet.
Maybe that will help? Anyone got any ideas?

if you leave all the computers on long enough for one to become the "master
browser" 10-15 min , they may just start showing up

(I'm assuming all the drives are "shared")

you can certainly map them if you want (and would probably be easier than
accessing thru network neighbourhood each time)

also you may want to try tip#1 on this page (it won't hurt anything) it may
help (it is for ME but still applies)

http://www.careyholzman.com/ (thks Carey)

hope some of that helps :>

Thanks Carey. I haven't mapped anything yet. I don't
share any complete drives. Only folders. Not sure
what "master browser" is. Could you explain what it is
and how to control it? Thanks.
