two units, one connected to cable broadband and sharing with a laptop
the laptop can send and receive emails as well as access the net
through the other machine but the laptop can't access the hard disk on
the other machine, even though this disc is set to 'share'
the ics machine has norton internet security 2005 on it and i believe
that may be the problem - both machines are running xp pro
any suggestions people?

Why don't you try disabling Norton (assuming that's possible) and see
what happens? Or even try uninstalling it? You can always reinstate it
afterward, if necessary.

Sounds like it could be a firewall problem. I had a similar problem
accessing the hard drive on my desktop PC from my laptop. The desktop is
running Sygate Personal Firewall and I found that turning that off
solved the problem. So I set up an advanced rule in Sygate trusting all
traffic in the IP range supported by my router (192.168.0.1 -
192.168.0.254).

Sorted it for me.

i) Norton internet security is a complete piece of arse
ii) are you on the same workgroup?
iii) go into the NIS settings for the firewall, you have the option of
adding a network range to bypass the firewall. Add the range of your
network, ie 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254

thanks friends,
tried all the above including adding the range to bypass firewall -
made no difference.
switching off norton's firewall did however allow normal functions in
both directions so that is the problem.
I'v just ordered a router with built in firewall, Norton Internet
Security will function only in antivirus mode in future.
There appears to be an obvious issue here, it turns out a friend of
mine runs a small network of 5 machines with Norton Internet Security
on the 'gateway' machine. he has an issue similar to mine but somewhat
more complex, for example to transfer data from PC 'a' to PC 'b' he
has to first transfer it to PC 'd' - mad!!
thanks again.
