I have just purchased a Linksys Cable/DSL router and now have broadband
internet access for both my home-built desktop and Dell laptop. I want to
share files and my printer, now. How? I know, I know....Do your own
research.... but the how-to sites I have visited seem to assume more than
a network beginners expertise, so, any help from you guys is much
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

What OS do you have running on the pc and the laptop? And although not
totally necessary it helps if they're same, ie. both XP.

ooh I was hoping you'd say XP, as I managed to get my two pc's sharing quite
nicely, and it's easier to walk through it if I can redo it while I type it.
I will have a rethink (long time since I used 98) and get back to you, if
noone posts a direct answer for you in the meantime...

Cheers,

Dan

It goes something like this:

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network
The following network components are installed:
(your network card)
TCP/IP
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

Primary Network Logon:
Client for Microsoft Networks

File and Print Sharing ...
I want to be able to give others access to my files
I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer(s)

Identification
(make sure both machines have the same Workgroup name)

Access Control
Share-level access control

Now right-click on a folder and it has a Sharing ... option.
Likewise with printers (in Start->Settings->Printers)

To use a printer from another machine
Start->Settings->Printers->Add Printer->Network Printer
and browse to the printer.
