This 40-user network has a file and print Server2K3 on a 3GHz Xeon. On
occasion the CPU usage goes to 70% and stays there for hours. When high,
server taskmanger shows high activity for dfssvc and lsass. There is also
high network traffic. Looking at the network's ethernet switch activity, I
isolated the problem to a user (XPPro) that had his search tool (minimized)
on a share on Server. As soon as I exited Search, the Server CPU activity
returned to normal - near zero.
High CPU activity returned later and I found a second user (XPPro) with
Explore (minimized) on a network share on Server. Exiting Explore restored
normal Server CPU usage. Other times these users are able to search without
problem. What is the cause of this and how do I stop it? Server log looks
normal, but I have seen several 1030 Application errors (can't query GP
list) that I think is a result of limited CPU cycles available.
