Is there a way to hide my real ip address and instead to put any fake/funny
hostname/ip address i want, so whenever i connect to a remote connected
host for (web/mail/irc/news) the host will get the fake one?

Can i do it from my own linux box and not behind proxy servers?

If so, How?

Hello,

you can do funny stuff like that with ettercap. But of course, this will
only work in a LAN.

No.

If you could change your public IP address, then how would packets find
their way back to you ?

Maybe. It's called ip spoofing. But then, you won't get back any reply to
your requests either.

Since the x-trace comes from your newsserver, there you are.

You can change the part that people see, because its not really used. But
you can NOT change the part that is usually in hidden headers because
that is the routing instructions. If you change that, then your
connection will not work.

On TV and in Movies they show police trying to trace phone calls. The
best that a person can do is bounce their call off of many different
numbers so that tracing them takes too much time and trouble to be worth
it. That is very much like the answer to your IP question. To make a
connection you must come from somewhere. You can lie to the equipment and
say you came form somewhere else but if you do then your connection will
not work so there is no reason to do it. The best you can do is just like
on TV when they are trying not to have their phone call traced.

This is beginning to smell like a hackers thread. There are (perhaps)
other, darker, places on the web or usenet to do so. People with good
intentions have no reason to hide their tracks.

Please take this discussion elsewhere.

Anonymity & Privacy is one of them. I'am not a bad person myself.

There are many ways to bounce an IP. Proxy, VPN, shell accounts, interface
servers such as mail2news gateways. None are absolutely safe and anonymous.
The best you can do is to chain different methods of bouncing and going
thru different countries.

Doing that makes it difficult to get information on who you are. Of course,
thats a real pain to do alot of chained connections. So the amount of
anonymous you are willing to do has to be compared to the amount of
anonymous you have to be. You can always be traced. You want to make the
trace more work than you are worth. If you just want privacy then you
probably do not need to do too much. If you are hiding from the mafia or
some other scarey organization then you will need more. If you are hiding
from a countries law enforcement then you would have to do many. If you are
hiding from international law enforcement... well being on their side I
have to feel optimistic that would not be possible for too many people for
too long.
