There's software out there that launches about 9999 SSID's with your one
card and only one is the real one. You can hide in plain sight :-)

You can start by turning off SSID broadcast. (don't forget to change the
default SSID as well)

To protect your network, enable WEP or WPA.

If it is only your laptop, you can disable DHCP in the access point & use a
static IP on the laptop
Change default class-c network (different from 192.168.x.x)

Enable MAC filter for your laptop.

Disable SSID Broadcasting on your AP.

Hi,

I was just wondering if there is any way to "hide" an access point. Let me
develop what I mean: I want my internet access point to only listen to the
wireless network, not send anything. When the access point receives some
key (perhaps WEP key?) then it can instiantiate communication with the
sender (in which case the access point in "revealed"). The reason i think
this can be useful, is because I usually only have one computer connected
to by wireless network (home network with 1 laptop). So I think it would
make sense for my network to be most of the time invisible (ok, i could
switch off the antenna, which is what I do).

Any other toughts on this topic ?

Alok.

What a good idea...
Unfortunately, it's pretty trivial to snoop for real packets, and inspect
what SSID is in use.
It may help to stop people clicking on your network name, but little else.
