hi,
i have a problem on my domain controller. under my network place, i can
see all computer in my domain but i can see the domain controller
itself. on all clients it is find that the server is also missing under
the network place.
all ping command from server to client and client to server work well
with ip address, but not always with computer name.
secondly, form my network places on the server, logged as administrator
you cannot access some of cleints machine to get to their share
ressources. an error message prompt you that you dont have the privilege
of an administrator.
dns: working fine
dhcp: no install
wins: no install
server: windows 2003 server sp2
client : all win xp
active directory : running
run NetBIOS over IP: didnt solve the problem
hope to solve it
thanks

If you're going to use network browsing, you need NetBIOS over TCP/IP
enabled on all nodes, and you should use WINS and disable the Computer
Browser service on all your workstations. If you have a routed network
(e.g., multiple subnets) you will probably want a WINS server in each
subnet, set up with push/pull replication.

Note that browsing has nothing to do with the proper functioning of AD,
which uses DNS only...it's just a convenience. With regards to your
inability to ping by IP address, perhaps you also have DNS problems. An
unedited ipconfig /all from your DC and a workstation will help us
troubleshoot this. And I do suggest you use DHCP so you can centrally manage
everything.

Lastly, I suggest you ditch the Techarena forums and go directly to the
source -- this is a public newsgroup and you'll have a better time in here
if you access it directly via a newsreader client. It's a lot easier to do
nearly everything that way. You can mark messages to be watched, filter the
views so you can see replies to your posts easily, and search.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like; no authentication is required.
