HH to ADSL advice sought

I have the following setup:

Downstairs Main master socket > bedroom 1 HH box linked to server in bedroom
2 by cat 5 under the floor.

My exchange is going live on the 8th and Pipex are arranging the conversion
from HH to ADSL.

I understand that the HH box will be removed as part of the conversion but
will a replacement socket be fitted instead? or do I have to arrange my own
ext. from the master socket downstairs?

On Saturday I purchased a modem router, can I use an inline connector to
connect rj45 to rj11?

Guidance appreciated.
Andy.

Yes, your old HH line will be converted to an analog line and an analog BT
master socket will be installed

Yes you can - RJ11 is simply a smaller plug size than RJ45; both fit into
inline connectors.

Best regards

I beleive not as standard. The master socket (downstairs) will be
replaced with a standard one and the HH box removed. You may be able
to get the BT technician to put a socket in place of the HH box or at
least leave the wire in place and connect it appropriately as an
extension to the master.

You might want to buy a socket for them to install, or they may be
kind and give you one.

No - they should fit the master socket at the HH box location, as by fitting
the HH box in that location, they will have extended the cable from the
original master socket location themselves.

The trick is to be nice to the man from BT - offer him tea and a biscuit
when he arrives and politely ask him to confirm
that he will put the master in the location you want. If for some strange
reason he says no, politely point out that you paid BT to put the HH box in
that location so its what you would expect.

Most BT installers are reasonable chaps - they'll play ball if you're polite
and don't give them hassle ! (and you feed them tea and biccies)

Had my HH converted to ADSL last month, and the BT engineer replaced
the HH box with a socket without me saying anything.

but the cable from the master socket to the HH box loops back the
signal, so if you remove the box and the cable then replace the master
socket faceplate you are back to where you started. Putting the box in
a different spot doesn't affect the location of the master socket.

Are you saying they will put a second socket in place of the Highway
box ?

Nope, should be a faceplate change only.

He can ask, but the cat5 cable is part of the highway (& in theory should be
recovered, but we don't)

What faceplate are you talking about - the HH box doesn¹t have a faceplate
or use one - its hard wired in ? Done it twice and both times they put a
master in without asking ....

Thanks for the replies so far, it seems that a lot depends on how happy the
BT engineer is when he arrives. There's more to this than meets the eye for
a newbie to ADSL anyway!

Does the following sound reasonable (and correct!)

Downstairs master socket (presumably BT will fit a ADSL(splitter/filter)
faceplate with RJ111 & BT phone socket(connected to sky box & main DECT
phone), a normal ext in place of the HH box upstairs into which will plug a
splitter/filter (or both?) into which sky(BT phone socket) & adsl via 2 an
inline adapter connecting rj111 to rj45 and then rj45 to rj111 at the other
end into the adsl router.

I hope this works and that BT don't make me wait a couple of weeks before
comming out, after all I feel as if I have waited long enough for broadband
as it is.

Cheers guys.

Andy

Andy, Just ask the engineer if he can leave the cat5(ish) cable insitu, you
can then use this as extension wiring back to where the hh box was, I take
it you are having a conversion to have a wires only/self installed version
of adsl...In this case he will fit a normal faceplate on the main socket,
one that can be undone...the faceplate you describe is where they fit the
equipment as well....Like everyone says if your nice and hes willing it will
not take long to fit an extension socket to the cable...then all you need is
a filter where ever you have equipment and bob's your uncle, one point most
modem/routers take an rj11 cable from the filter to the modem unless yours
happens to be different. HTH
