Help! XP Internet Shared Connection nightmare

Hi,

I have wireless broadband box, one XP Home laptop and one XP
Professional desktop. I normally connect the laptop and desktop via an
ethernet hub (there for expansion of my network). I use the desktop as
a "file server", but I want to work on the laptop. You need to
"connect" on the broadband box, so it has to be connected directly to
one of the computers; it won't just work on the hub.

That meant I had to buy an ethernet card (for the extra port) for the
desktop, so I could connect to it (via the hub) and it could connect to
the wireless broadband box.

So the system is

Laptop -> hub

Desktop -> hub
-> Wireless broadband

Now I want to share the internet connection on the desktop so I can
access it from the laptop. I can normally connect the two computers via
the hub. I have tried

1. Assigning fixed addresses to the laptop and desktop (the broadband
box gets one assigned from the ISP each logon)
2. "Sharing" the Internet connection on the desktop NIC connected to
the hub
3. 2. "Sharing" the Internet connection on the desktop NIC connected to
the broadband box
4. Allowing all kinds of services for each of the shared connections

Nothing I have tried works. Any ideas?

Cheers

Neil

What is the "wireless broadband box"? Is it a router? As it is wireless I
assume it is. If so, you shouldn't need to connect using a PC, the router
does that for you. Have you set it up correctly? What make/model is it?

I am in Bangladesh. My broadband (and telephone supplier) stick an
aerial on the roof which leads down to a box with three connectors. One
in, one out to PC (Broadband) and one for the telephone. You connect
this directly to a PC, not to a hub, because you have to "dial" 172 and
give a name and password to logon. So my question is how to share this
connection.

I have to network cards in the desktop. One goes to the Broadband box,
one goes to the hub. The laptop is also connected to the hub.

Cheers

Neil

I have managed to get other services working (emule). But not Internet
Explorer. IE works from the desktop (which is connected to the ethernet
card that connects to Broadband), but not from the laptop.

If you right click on the network connection that you use to connect to the
broadband, then click on properties, is there an advanced tab along the top?

If so click on it and select internet connection sharing. The laptop should
be set up to receive an ip address automatically i.e. not have a static
address.

You may not have the option for ICS because of your unusual set up. If you
haven't, try using a proxy server. A good free one is CCProxy

Cheers Tony. After installing the proxy I can use IE from the laptop.

Was this a limitation of the Broadband box setup I have? of Windows XP?

I don't know to be honest. I've never had to set up a system that dials out
over an Ethernet connection. Most setups use either a USB modem with a dial
up or a router/server which handles the dial up/connection. I would of
thought you could use ICS with your set up but can't say for sure. Perhaps
someone else with a bit more knowledge of ICS with an Ethernet connection
could enlighten us.

you can and the OP did use it for emule etc. Sounds like the laptop IE
had a "dial a connection" setting in IE or was pointing at the wrong
proxy or something, hard to say from a distance without the exact
error message.
