Greetings,

I feel like I'm on the 5yard line and just can't put the ball in the
endzone! :-\ I can't get the WRT54G talking to the Orinoco gold card
with WPA.

I'd welcome any hints/advice.

The Linksys WRT54G access point/router is running with firmware
v1.41.2. I've configured Security>Wireless to "WPA-PreShared Key" with
"WPA Algorithms: TKIP", and a group key renewal at 0 seconds.

In the laptop, I've got a Proxim ORiNOCO 802.11bg ComboCard Gold
running driver 2.4.2.17 22Sep2003, and the Proxim client software. My
profile is set up with "WPA-PSK" selected, I've cheerfully clicked
configure, put in the pre-shared key for the WPA.

For testing I've left SSID broadcasts enabled, the network is seen by
the proxim client, and I've activated the profile.

But there is no joy in mudville. Hell I can connect to my neighbor's
wireless networks which are wide open, but not my own. :-\

Anyone got WPA working on the WRT54G?

Best Regards,

The WRT54G has WPA problems prior to the 1.42.2 firmware. The 1.41.2
firmware that you are using can cause the router to crash if you try to
connect to it using WPA. This may only affect 802.11b (not g) since some
people had WPA working with 1.41.2. However, the 1.42.2 firmware brings
with it some new bugs; one of which makes it impossible for me to stay with
this firmware. In addition, it is not easy to downgrade from the 1.42.2
firmware (i.e. 1.42.2 will not let you downgrade to any prior US versions)
so beware.

What OS are you using? If it's XP, you should use the WZC service built
into XP.

Interesting and good to know--I actually may actually have seen this.
I've seen my router stop responding to DHCP requests and admin web
page accesses on the wired LAN ports after WPA connection attemps.

Hrmm. I know at least on the first attempts I was in G only mode on
both sides. I can't say for sure though--I started trying all kinds
of crap, but I'll try this firmware upgrade next.

Cool...thanks for the warning. Can anyone be more specific as to the
bugs so I can best judge the risk/reward?

I'm on Win2k, and I'm using Proxim/ORiNOCO's WPA supplicant that comes
with their new drivers and client software.

I'm having no problems with the WRT54G and my Dell laptop and an older
laptop using a Linksys card. While I wish the distance was a bit better
(before the upgrade to the latest version, I was able to get better
distance) I have had no problems with WPA.
I don't know much about how it works only that mine does.
Good luck,

Likely fueled by Linksys probably using only their own cards for
in-house testing on WPA! :-) WiFi cert should clear that up shortly
I guess.

Cool though--good datapoint.

Thanks!

Well I do now! The problem described below was solved by a firmware
upgrade of the Linksys WRT54G v1.1 from firmware v1.41.2 to v1.42.3.

My ORiNOCO 802.11bg ComboCard Gold (with Proxim's client v2.4.2.14
under win2k using Proxim Driver 2.4.2.17 22Sep2003) is cheefully
talking WPA+TKIP using a pre-shared key in 802.11g only mode to the
Linksys as I type.

Cheers all, and thanks for steering me in the right direction with the
new Linksys firmware.
