I'm guessing a couple of possibilties:
* The router needs to be configured somehow. Maybe the wireless bit is
turned off by default, for security? Usually router configuration is
done by attaching a PC using wires, then going to a configuration web
page on the actual router itself. Read the manual that came with the
router, this will tell you how to find that configuration page. Once
the wireless bit of the router is configured, you can disconnect the
wires.
OR
* The wireless bit of the router might be broken (for instance, a
broken antenna; take it back to the shop) or the signal is blocked
(for instance, on the same frequency as your cordless phones; use the
configuration web page I talked about above to assign the router's
wireless network to a different channel).

Should be, yes.
The only time wireless devices really aren't compatible is if they
come from different regions of the world. For instance, USA wireless
networks run on slightly different frequencies to UK wireless
networks. Most will be able to work with both, but some are a bit more
picky.

It sounds like you have done everything right on your PC. I think you
have got to configure your ROUTER now. Read the router manual.
If you don't have the router manual, go to the manufacturer's website,
you might be able to download a copy of the manual from there.
