We have instruments that are attached to the network and for some reason I
have continual problems with the windows 98 machines connecting to the
network. They can see the network and I even copied a file to one through
the network, but when I try to log onto the machine no matter what I use to
log in I get an error saying that the password supplied is invalid or the
server has denied access.

I have even tried logging in as the domain administrator and it refuses to
allow me to log onto the network.

I tried installing the dsclient with no success. I don't understand what
the problem is, it was on the network just fine yesterday. Another odd thing
I'm noticing is that when I log on local to the machine and run ipconfig/all
it's got a valid IP address!!! I can ping the domain controller and
everything! I can see the local intranet (none of the links work though).

It is very unfortunate that I have to keep supporting these older O/Ss, but
the windows 98 machines are DEFINITELY the ones I have the most trouble with.

I'm out of options on what to try next so I'm now asking the experts.

Let me rephrase the error exactly how it reads. The domain password you
supplied is invalid or the server has denied your access.

Never mind. I installed the wrong version of DSClient. I then installed the
DSClient9x and the problem seems to be fixed. my bad for not remembering
there are 2 versions of this.

Not really. I'd say the installation program should have checked the
operating system and stopped with an appropriate error message first
time round.

Jim.

Unfortunately the problem only appeared to be resolved, but for some reason
this same very machine got disconnected from the network again!!!!!

I've got several machines that run instruments that keep getting booted from
the network. Unfortunately all personnel that used to maintain these
computers have left, and since then I have noticed these same computers
consistently have issues staying connected to the network.

It's a real problem because while the instruments connected to these
computers are running, the disconnects shut down the instrument and ruins the
whole run cycle. We're talking about windows 98 machines and windows 2000
machines.

From what I remember the DSClient I installed that I believed resolved the
problem is intended for pre 2000 operating systems. Now I'm seeing this same
ugly problem not only with the Windows 98 machine, it's also happening with a
windows 2000 machine.
