Hello dudes.
I've to use whois database to know to which continent an IP address belongs.
If I perform a whois search on RIPE database for an USA IP address, the
search will fail.

So I thought to perform an exhaustive search on the 4 Whois server.

Is there a more specific way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

I use:

whois -h whois.arin.net foo

If it tells me it's another NIC, than I use that.

whois -h whois.lacnic.net foo

etc.

I always start with ARIN like Seth just said.

If ARIN doesnt have the information, it will tell you which
WHOIS server in the world have the information.

The others wont do that.

You may see some of the avaiable registries on IANA
http://www.iana.org/ipaddress/ip-addresses.htm

You will see more like RIPE, APNIC, KRNIC, JPNIC,
LACNIC, BRNIC, ...

Ciao

Oops! (E-Mail Removed) (Francesco Sblendorio) was seen spray-painting on a wall:

Each TLD has a (potentially) separate central WHOIS registry.

(I am involved in managing several of them.)

If you look at the source code to the commonly-distributed WHOIS
client <http://www.linux.it/~md/software/>, you'll find a database
listing what whois servers have recently been authoritative.

This is not always true, sometimes you need to make more then one step to
get down to the final authoritative server. For example....

ARIN -> APNIC -> BRNIC (authoritative).

The whois system seems to suffer heavily from lack of standardization
between registries though This makes it more difficult to perform these
type of searches programmaticly.

<.. snip ..>

Good Luck!
