www.adslguide.org.uk
www.ispreview.co.uk

Bear in mind adslguide does not list some providers who do not have their
own central pipe. Have a read, look at the reviews and find the service that
is most suitable for you.

If you want advice on here, then you really need to think about what your
requirements are first... what are you going to use it for? Occasional
e-mail checking or 24 hour downloading, or somewhere in between? Is it for a
single computer or to share between many? Are you more interested in a lower
monthly fee or free activation and modem? Do you have any special
requirements? What level of support do you need? Do you need e-mail
addresses with your service? Etc...

There are a large number of diverse and specialised providers out there,
each suited to a particular set of requirements. No one service is right for
all.

Good luck

Dominic

1MG unlimited downloads @£34.00 p/m....
Did I make a good choice

Not a bad one - I think i`ve had 3 short "down-times" in 17 months (all
back up again within hours) - i`m happy with the service i`m getting for
£23.44 a month for a 512k connection (no port blocking, no usage cap etc)

Depends what you want.

I would obviously say we're the best service on offer

If you want to send us an email (Remove the spam from the email address
above) and include your telephone number, we'll ring you back for a chat
about which options are best for you.

<snip details>

I can't see how this is genuinely helpful to the OP - it really is just an
advert, which is forbidden by the newsgroup's charter. You could at least
have qualified it by noting that there are many services. You are not the
best for everybody.

The willingness to discuss the users needs, and if necessary say
"Sorry, we don't have a package suitable" seems to be one option
you have assumed is missing. Give Leslie some credit - he surely
isn't going to push a potential customer to have some service that
can later be proven to be unsuitable or too expensive - that would
do the ISP a lot more harm than good. Plenty of posts say "give
us a try" but this is one of the few times I've seen an ISP being
given a gentle flaming for posting in response to a user query.

Fair point, but on this occasion I don't think any service is suitable until
the OP has said what they need. Don't forget that, if every ISP who could
potentially gain the customer posted in response to every "which is the
best" post, this group just wouldn't be the place it is for getting useful
help and support for the many people who use it.

To be even fairer to Leslie, the post would probably be better if it was
qualified with "have a look at our rating on... compared to others" - ICUK
actually have some pretty happy customers on net4nowt.com and a very high
rating.

Maybe it was just the ICUK name that made me nervous, it sounds awfully like
the ISP that I work for

Apologies, but the user is free to compare us to any other provider people
recommend.

I'm recommending us, obviously as I have an interest in "us" and other
people will recommend their provider.

But I did mention the "Depends what you want" clause, which basically
means we may not be suitable at all, but if the user contacted us, then we
may well be suitable for their needs - the poster is happy, we're happy
and hopefully you're happy too :-)

And it's not as if I just post 'advert' type posts here, I do sometimes
post replies to questions on techie issues that are nothing to do with
people asking for ADSL or Broadband quotes / service offers.
