Everything works great until I enable WEP on both devices and at that
point, no connection takes place.

I don't have any other wireless hardware to test to see which device
is at fault. The WG511 card goes into scanning mode (flashing green
light) and won't connect.

The firmwares on the devices are:
WG511 - 1.00.01.00 ; Driver 1.0.14.47
WG602 - 1.5.67

My understanding is that both firmwares should enable proper operation
with finished draft 802.11g.

I have tried entering the same exact passphrase for both devices to no
avail; I've tried manually entering in the same key for both devices
to no avail; and I've tried going from 128 bits down to 64 bits to no
avail. What I do find odd is that on the WG511, the options listed
are 40/64bit and 104/128bit-- is there some way to verify whether it's
using the 64 rather than the 40 or the 128 rather than the 104?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

TIA!

Er... nevermind... I used a shorter passphrase and WEP now works like
a charm. I had no idea that using too long a passphrase wouldn't
work-- is there any mention of this limitation somewhere?

Actually, I was wrong... in addition to the shorter passphrase, I'd
set the Authentication type to Open System.

There has to be some way to get the Shared Key to work... or do I have
a defective product?

I just set up and got working the same combination as you. The
combination came right up with no trouble with a wide open system --
not useful -- and it took me a couple of hours of trial and error to
get the security elements working. It was a little surprising to me
to see that two similar products from the same company were somewhat
inconsistent in their functionality, documentation, and default
settings. I also downloaded and installed the latest firmware and
drivers for both units.

The key (NPI*:-) things were:

1. Disable the button on one of the WG511 config screens that says to
use the 802.1x ethernet authentication scheme (the WG602 doesn't
support this). I don't remember the exact wording of this option or
what screen it was on. I can look this up later if you need it.

2. I manually typed in the 26-character hex key into the Key 1 field
on the WG602 security setup screen, and carefully typed in the
identical key into the WG511 setup screen.

3. I made sure both were set to Shared Key, 128 bit.

4. I enabled the MAC address filtering on the WG602 and entered the
MAC address of the WG511.

5. (Probably not relevant if you already had it working w/o security)
I had to set the TCP/IP Properties of the wireless connection to find
my DNS server and gateway.

Good luck --

-Mike

The 802.1x authentication is the only thing I haven't tried, and I'm
not sure where it is in the WG511's config utility. If you could
please let me know where to find it, that would be much appreciated.

Anybody know how to do this under Windows 2000?

As far as I can tell, it's something to do with
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\WZCSVC\

Beyond that, I'm not sure which values need to be altered.

I looked up Microsoft's Knowledgebase article Q313664 about 802.1x
authentication in Win2k; apparently Service Pack 3 and lower don't
support it. And once the Hotfix or Service Pack 4 have been
installed, 802.1x support is easily visible without making a few steps
and it is supposedly disabled by default...

Well, mine was enabled. So I went and disabled the 802.1x support on
the Authentication tab... to no avail. The card was still in blinky
mode. I was originally thinking perhaps I should have spent my money
on an access point with 802.1x support...

but even with 802.1x support disabled on my wireless card, I still
can't connect via Shared Key WEP.
