Here's my set up -

1. cable modem
2. LinkSys WRT45G, wireless router connected to 1 and 3.
3. Linksys 1GB switch and 100MB switch
4. Windows 2003 Server Enterprise connected to 3 with 1GB NIC
5. Several workstations connected to 3 running XP
6. Several laptops connected to 2 running XP

W2K3 server runs DHCP.
W2k3 server runs DNS which is forwarded to my ISP's DNS servers (as
listed on the status pages of the Linksys).
DHCP is disabled on the LinkSys.

My problem is that none of the workstations can connect to the
internet.

However my W2K3 server can get to the internet fine, so I assume DNS,
the LinkSys, the Router and the ISP settings are all good.

The workstations and laptops can see the local network and access
files and shares so I'm happy that's working OK.

DNS also seems to be working OK - if I do a ping www.cnn.com (or
whatever) on the workstaions it resolves to an address. But type
www.cnn.com into Internet Explorer on the same workstation and it
gives a "Server not found" error.

The LinkSys provides a rudimentary firewall and NAT.

Help! Why can't my workstations work on the internet?

What do the workstations have set as their default gateway and are they
using only the W2003 server's IP address as their DNS server? Have you
checked the internet options setup to make sure no proxy address is set?

Thanks for the response. To answer your questions...

> What do the workstations have set as their default gateway

Clients are setup for obtain DNS and DCHP automatically - I thought
that would also assign a default gateway - but default gateway appears
blank.
I tried it gateway set with the LinkSys static IP as that's what I
thought it should be - but no luck.

>and are they using only the W2003 server's IP address as their DNS

server?
Yes, it's set to auto DNS and IPCONFIG /ALL confirms they are using
W2003 server as DNS & for DHCP.

>Have you checked the internet options setup to make sure no
>proxy address is set?

Internet options setup is auto detect settings and no proxy is set up.

It indeed should be. Check your scope options again. This is the problem.

Spot on, many thanks for your help, I'd been tearing my hair out.

I had overriden the default gateway on the clients machines but that
for some reason hadn't worked and so had misled me.

I confess I didn't even know about the DHCP scope options settings - I
had wondered where clients got their info from - other than assigned
IP address; now I know.

The option for the "default gateway" setting is "003 Router", mentions
nothing about "default gateway" but I guessed that was the correct
setting.

Once again - thanks!
