Hi All,

Have some friends, who at the moment prefer the idea of going with BT
for Broadband (all on one bill etc)

I've Googled the newsgroup for previous posts on the subject and
appreciate its been discussed before but just so I have the facts
correct for them is it still the case at the moment that to use a
different "From" e-mail address when using BT's smtp server you must
register this address with them ? Without doing mail is rejected ?

If anybody can point to a URL on BT's website it would be appreciated (I
havn't found one yet!)

Many thanks.

I didn't think that was ever the case - just that more recently you have
to authenticate with their SMTP server.

It certainly is the case for BT business customers. They will not
allow email from domains that have not been registered with them for
what they call "mail relay"

And they can be quite strict about the criteria... you have to prove
that you are the domain owner. Therefore they will not allow domains
belonging to other ISPs.

Which isn't, in itself, unreasonable, except if they require the domain
to also be hosted by them, which would probably be more costly than a
great number of alternative hosting services...

Quite right too! :-)

If someone is still using an ISP's mail service as their main contact
mail address, then they deserve everything they get (or don't!). FWIW,
for a once-only fee of about a tenner it would be possible to send mail
using fastmail.net (this is a low level 'member' account, no generous
mailbox or services included, but perfectly adequate for SMTP, allows
whatever mail address one wishes [authentication uses login details,
of course] and as it's a once-only payment, compares favourably
with a number of other mail services).

http://btyahoo.com/smtpnonbt

It appears they support SMTP AUTH.

as far as I know, most ISPs use SMTP AUTH, or pop-before-smtp. You
just need to set up the client appropriately and use your valid
btinternet email address / password to authenticate.

Looks like a "Yes" would do then, given you've not answered whether a
*non BT address* would be acceptable... You've shown what might be
needed to authenticate (and even that might not be correct, since
it depends on whether one has a "Premium" account - according to
the notes on the web link someone else posted).

I would say most just restrict SMTP use to clients on their IP address
space.

Yes, I'd second that. One I used back in 1995 used the POP-before-SMTP
but since then, most want fees to allow SMTP if used from "outside".

Sorry, it seemed so blindingly obvious that an ISP isn't going to
accept logins from non-users that I didn't state that bit. For the
record, you can't use SMTP AUTH or pop-before-smtp unless you have a
valid account with the provider.
