I am trying to set up a network, primarily for an Internet connection,
from my Timewarner cable modem through a Netgear WGT 624 router which
is wired (Cat 5 cable) to my old (Windws 98) Compaq PC's HP EN
1207D-TX-PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adadter. It appears that a signal is
coming through, but I get the following message when I try to get onto
the internet: "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://
------------. A connection could not be established."

When I go to my Device Manger and click on Network adapters, I see the
following Adapters: Dial-Up Adaper, Dial-Up Adapter #2 (PN Support),
Existing Ndis2 Driver, HP -------Fast Ethernet Adapter and Microsoft
Virtual Private Networking Adapter. By the way, I get a yellow
exclamation mark by the Existing Ndis2 Driver indicating that it is not
working properly. I reinstalled the driver. Same thing.

I do have a newer laptop (w/Windows XP), which does hook up with the
same wiring, so that I know a signal is coming through.

I'm sure that I must be doing something wrong. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

What are your settings in Internet Options, Connections tab?

Try running WINIPCFG from the Start>Run box. First, what are the current
settings? After writing those down, click Release All, then Renew All. What
happens? If no error message, what are the new settings? Does IE now
connect?

OK, then. Probably just a function of waiting until Windows finally bothered
to update its connection configuration, which can take up to 15 minutes or
more. I'm always impatient and use WINIPCFG, instead.

For the sake of logic if nothing else, I'd uninstall any adapters, Clients
and Protocols you're not actually using (VPN, DUN adapter #2, even the main
DUN adapter if you're not going to be using dial-up anymore.) They're all
easy to put back in if needed (but keep that installation CD handy!)
