hi there,
i'm trying to find out how to change the setting for the 20 pc's on my
networked system.

i have 20 computers, approx 300 users or less, each with own user id and
password, my server is Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition,
manufacturer Dell Server P2600.

i want to make each desktop picture the same for each user so it gives out
information about the computer, system and rules of use. but i want to try
and restrict it being changed by the user as well.

when the user accounts were created they were given rights as Back Up Users
and as Power Users, but have no administrative rights.

other than that i'd like a pop up after each user logs on giving the rules of
use etc.

any help, even to tell me its not possible would be great thanx.

You may want to use group policy.

Active Directory (a domain as opposed to a workgroup).

With 20 workstations? You really are making life harder for yourself.
You can't control your policies (or much else) centrally without AD. So
you'll either have to do a lot on each workstation, or consider moving to AD
where you can be lazy and sit in one place most of the day.

i didn't set the work group up, it was already in place when i started
working there. is it straight forward to set up an AD?

It isn't *that* hard, but I suggest you do some reading first....(if your
mind is at all like mine, sometimes it's easier to get a decent feel for
something via an overview in an actual old-fashioned book printed on actual
old-fashioned paper).

Also try subscribing to m.p.windows.server.active_directory and
......server.dns and lurk in there for a bit.
