Hi i've got two computers that are hard wired, the first acts a
server and has a cable modem attached to a ethernet card. It also has
a second ethernet card which has a cable running to the second
computer and attaches via it's ethernet card, i.e a basic network
connection.

I also have a Acer Travelmate laptop with a Centrino chip and built
in wireless capability. I went to PC World asking for what i needed to
link up the laptop to use the wireless side and was told to purchase a
WIRELESS NETWORK ADAPTER. i've then purchased a Belkins USB WIRELESS
ADAPTER. I've loaded the drivers and conected via the USB port on my
main computer but nothing happens. My laptop doesn't recognize the
wireless adapter and my desktop doesn't see the laptop.

Please help me. I would appreciate any help on this matter.

TIA

wor wor, wait a minute, the guy in PCWorld really screw up.
Your laptop already WiFi capable and all u need is a router coz wireless
capability mean it has wireless network adapter in it and wireless network
adapter need an Access Point (AP) which is a wireless router.

Wireless network card works differently from wire card so I guess u have to
re-route all your connection to a single AP instead.

No, he didn't - in that he was correct in that the DESKTOP or its wireline
NETWORK does need some sort of wireless device.... Your response seems to miss
that.

Here's my understanding of what you have:
* cabe modem to 1st ethernet card on 1st computer
* 2nd computer to 1st computer's 2nd ethernet card using crossover cable.

Here's what you need do:
* get a wireless router
* connect cable modem to router's WAN port
* connect 1st computer's 1st ethernet card to one of router's LAN ports
* connect 2nd computer's ethernet card to one of router's LAN ports
* sell your USB wireless adapter, 2nd ethernet card on 1st computer, and
cross over cable

The PC world guy wasn't entirely wrong. You *can* connect your laptop to the
computer with the USB adapter if you set both adapters to 'ad-hoc' mode. But
that means that computer has to be on for the laptop to be able to access
the rest of the network (and your cable connection).

If you want the laptop to operate independently then you need to attach a
router and wifi Access Point to your cable modem, (then you wont need the
USB adapter) but you have to set the both wifi ends to 'infrastructure'
mode.
HTH
Regards,
Martin
