the fact that you can get broadband eliminates some possibilities but this
would occur even in each machine had a different 'workgroup' name. I
frequently connect clients systems to my workshop router using the default
'workgroup' name just to perform updates etc. Check this first.
Following that, check that you have enabled file & printer sharing on each
machine. If this is the case then it may be that it is necessary to change
your file & printer sharing protocol. WinXP sometimes (depending on how you
used the wizard) fails to allow file & printer sharing over tcp/ip which,
all things considered, is a good idea!
I have used the following process to get round this problem on a number of
occasions for my own network and also for many clients.
In each machine, right click the network card and in properties add the
nwlink ipx/spx....protocol. Restart both systems and then check to see if
sharing is working, bear in mind that it takes a moment or two for shared
folders to appear in the 'my network places' folder.
If sharing is now working you should disable (unbind) file & printer sharing
on the tcp/ip protocol (Network connections, advanced, advanced settings)
making a healthy separation between the internet & file sharing. You should
then go to
www.grc.com and use the 'shields up' facility to check for any
open ports.
If however you are still unable to share files then post back here and we
will await any other responses.
good luck
