Hi,

I'm new to networking and I could really do with some advice.
I basically want to create a small network of about 3 PCs and 1 Mac
(currently G4 but soon G5).
I also want to share an ADSL connection between these computers.
The network will be mostly used for moving digital audio files, many several
hundred MB each, so speed is a priority.

What advice could anyone offer in terms of how it should be setup and
equipment needed?

Thanks,
ben m

Buy a 4 port ADSL router. That will share the ADSL connection and
also network all your computers assuming they all have network cards.

Well as far as I know most 4 port routers are 100BaseT, but I will defer
to anyone with more knowledge as to actual data speeds. I don't have any
trouble here, transfering files in secs over this 100 network between 2
Linux boxes and a win box, also has network printer attached as well as
ADSL connection.

If you are going to be effectively working on files across the network,
you may want to investigate prices of gigabit ethernet, over fiber and
copper (copper is the way you probably will go), and external
USB2/Firewire drives.
Then you would need an ADSL router to give an internet connection.

Just had a thought, if you bought a cheap ADSL 4 port router from Ebuyer,
it would be worth trying it out to see if the file transfer speeds are
good enough. If the speeds are not enough you could always sell the router.
