Hi

Can anyone out there help with this problem.

Set up is
NTL broadband modem
3Com Office Connect wireless router
Desktop PC,XP Pro, standard Network card
Laptop XP Home 3com wireless network card

Modem is connected to the wireless router with RJ45 cable, same for
Desktop PC, the laptop uses the wireless connection.

Both machines are set to Dynamic IP addressing and the laptop can
browse the internet no probs wirelessly, the IP it has been assigned
is from the ntl modem.

The desktop PC displays a connection and is given an IP address from
the router which but it cannot browse the internet. I have made both
machines members of ther same workgroup but they cannot see each other
on the network. I cannot ping either way.

I have tried lots of things incl. turning off firewall, disabling
encryption, resetting the router and reinstalling the PC network card,
but still nothing.

I am not to bothered if I cannot get the internet on the desktop PC as
the main reason I use this for is for storage of media files that I
want to stream to my laptop.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Is the NTL modem connected to the WAN port of the 3Com router? it sounds
like you could have everything on the LAN side.
Either that or its set for some kind of single PC bridge.

There are 4 RJ45 ports on the 3com router, numbered 1 to 4, next to
number 1 it says LAN and this is where the modem is plugged into.
There are no ports that say WAN only a connection for ADSL which takes
the normal phone jack.

Cheers

Then you have the wrong router, you need a broadband router with an
ethernet WAN port instead of a built in ADSL modem.
The way you have the router connected means it is just working as a
hub/switch.
Hope this helps you get sorted, but sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thats fine, at least I helped you realise your problem
You never know, you might be able to sell it on Ebay for more than you
paid for it.
Good luck getting everything sorted.

Would it be possible to buy and adapter to allow me to plug the RJ45
plug from the cable modem into the routers ADSL RJ11 port? If so would
this work?

No, it wouldn't work, just like it wouldn't work to plug a dial-up modem
into an Ethernet socket.
