Help Request XP to Win98

Hi,

I have been trying to network an XP (home) system with a Win98SE
system, using an ethernet connection. So far I've only had partial success.

I can see the XP machine in 98's Network Neighbourhood, and can transfer
files in both directions using 98's keyboard.

At the XP terminal, I can't access the 98 machine, and XP says that I
don't have permission.

I think the problem is that on the 98 machine I can't grant permission
for other users on the network to share its HD's or printers. When I
right click on a drive in MyComputer, and select Sharing, and click on
OK, I get the message message -

"You have created a shared resource, but haven't given
anyone permission to use it.

I then click on Yes to Add Permissions. I then
get the message -

"Cannot view list of users ... try again later"

I've looked in several books about setting up Win98 networks, but can't
find any mention about this menu item!

I wonder whether this ia a common problem. Any suggestions would be
much appreciated.

Do you use the Network sign on for W98 - i.e. do you have a user and
password set up?
If not you need to add a user (use same name and PW as for XP) and then
log on to W98 using that name/password.
I can't remember how you get to that in W98, it's probably control
panel - users or network connections but you may need to poke around :-)

No. AFAIK the Win98 system is just a single user system.

Thanks, I'll try that.

IIRC when I tried to add a password to the Win98 network system, I had
problems.

You also need to change the logon so that it uses a network logon,
sorry again, can't remember how, it's been a long time since I used W98
:-)

Do you want to share a drive or a folder?
I've not tried a drive, but have not had problems with folders -
though 98SE systems usually are network logon (work system) or family
logon (home system). My home system doesn't have sharing at the
moment, as it's used for Internet access, but I'll try later.

I've now managed to get it going OK. "Password" was the clue! I found
that in the psssword section of Control panel there was an option for
setting Remote Administration. When I did this and set up a password, it
was then possible to set up a password for the C drive.

This then worked OK, but the two passwords had to be the same!

I've has similar problems with other parts of Win98, where settings for
a feature are scattered around the system!

Many thanks for the help.

Cheers

Clive

I have been trying to share the main C: drive.

As reported in my previous posting, selecting remote administration in
the password section of Control Panel, seemed to cure the problem. I
wondered if this was needed because C:\ was the drive containing the
operating system?
Perhaps another drive or just a folder in C:\, wouldn't need remote admin.

I turned OFF remote admin, and found that D:\ worked OK.

I then turned off sharing in all drives, and powered down.

On powering up, I found that I could set up C: for sharing, without
remote admin being selected.

I guess that Win98 has somehow changed it's method of setting up device
sharing, as it now has a different screen, when sharing has been
selected.

Cheers

Clive
