The problem is
When I connect my laptop up (which has xp pro installed)
it connects to the internet fine, sees other computers fine, but when I try
to access my laptop from any of the other pcs it asks for a password, but I
haven't any passwords set up on the laptop.

its set by default, and to access it from other machines, those machines
will have to have the same username and password as your xp machine (win98
didnt support user login prompts, only passwords)

or you can probably disable the password protection, im not sure how though,
dont really use windows

I had this problem with Windows 2000. In all the PCs in which I installed
Windows myself, my name is "Mike McConnell". In an XP PC that was built for
me, my name was set up as "Mr. McConnell". This last PC couldn't access the
Win 2000 PC without a password (that didn't exist!). My solution was to
create a new "User" in Win 2000 called "Mr. McConnell" and then I could
connect OK.

You may have to set up new users in XP using the names registered in the
Win98se PCs - right click the "My Computer" icon in the 98se PCs, select
'Properties' and see what the "Registered to" name is. Set that up as a new
user in XP. Also use that name as the Username in the Network logon dialog
which comes up in Win 98 when booting.

Strangely, the PC that had Win2000 is now running XP Pro and I didn't have
the problem when I first accessed it after a clean install of XP.

Mike.
