Help please ... Wireless 54 or 11mps

I am about to get a Wireless router/modem.

I have narrowed it down to Vigor 2600 due to the good reports I have read
here.

What advantage would I have if I waited for the 2600g with the 54mps as
opposed to buying a 11mps version now?

I use my system for gaming and browsing and a laptop connected (will be
wirelessly)

Thanks

The only advantage is if you'r going to be moving large files by wireless
in your home.
If you are not doing that, then there is almost no benefit.

Using 11Mb/s WiFi you can't play mpeg files across network. An individual
device will not be allocated more than half of available bandwidth and
5.5Mb/s is not enough for most mpg files. I'm about to replace my home
11Mb/s setup with a 54Mb/s because I use the Nebula DTT (Freeview) card to
record TV (mpeg2) onto a file server and hopefully eventually it will even
be able to stream live TV channels across network (Nebula are rumoured to be
developing the required software).

It's enough for most files, but not for off-air recorded stuff.
5.5Mb/s is well above typical DVD rates.

Low resolution mpeg1 or mpeg2 files destined for or copied from VCD or SVCD
have low enough bit rate but all full resolution mpeg2s ripped from DVDs,
recorded from DTT or D1 digitized VHS tapes comfortably exceed 8Mb/s. I have
over 300GB of mpegs on my media server and hardly any of them would play. A
PowerDVD or similar player will start but stutters after a few seconds then
comes to a complete halt. Obviously can't buffer enough data for continuous
play so gives up and just sits there showing a blank screen.

Thanks all for the replies.

As broadband isn't with me for another 8 weeks, I think I'll wait and see
what the price difference will be on the 2 units.

And ONLY if you are in a HURRY to move large files.
Almost ? I see none, in fact as some report suggest the different
modulation may mean shorter range for 54g.

In article <blr5kv$fa8tt$(E-Mail Removed)>,
(E-Mail Removed), a.k.a Alien Zord says...

Perhaps you need to come round my mate's house and see it in action on
his 42" plasma screen which is connected to his laptop which in turn is
connected to his desktop via Wi-Fi on a couple of cheap Belkin adapters.

It works, and it works well.

Last time I steamed a DVD it became a swiss roll.

Seriously, play and stream are 2 different things. Streaming software
compensates for media speed by reducing the bit rate and resolution if
necessary. That's why it wasn't quite DVD quality.
Anyway, streaming is not really desirable for a home network. I want any PC
to be able to play any file at any position even the same file played by
several PCs at different positions. My tests so far showed that on 100baseTX
LAN six PCs can play the same full resolution mpeg2 file at different
positions within the file.
