Help, please!! Windows 98 DNS problems with Verizon DSL

Downloaded the latest critical Windows patches this morning, and now
can't connect to anything. I'm guessing maybe the patch blew away the
networking settings, and I have no idea what they're supposed to be.

Setup is: Windows 98 PC connected to wireless router/firewall,
connected to Verizon DSL. Other PCs connected to same router are
working fine, one XP Home, one XP professional.

I first tried IPCONFIG RELEASE/RENEW, but there seems to be some
problem releasing. I've also been messing around with the network card
settings: WINS was disabled after the patches were installed, so I
tried switching that to DHCP or some such, since that's what my XP
machine is set to -- no luck.

Windows 98's default WINS setting is "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution".
However, a typical home network doesn't have a WINS server and doesn't
use WINS for anything, so that setting doesn't matter.

What is the problem with releasing? What exactly happens when you try
it? If there's an error message, what does it say?

What IP address is the network card getting? If it's 169.254.x.x, it
means that the computer can't communicate with the router's DHCP
server to get an IP address.
