Help please, I can't connect 2 PCs via router!

I must be missing a trick here.

I have two PCs and a Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway (wireless router with
built in ADSL modem)

PC No.1 runs XP Home (service pack 2) and is connected to the router by
direct cable
PC No.2 runs XP Pro (service pack 2) and is connected to the router via a
Linksys wireless card
Both PCs are running Norton Internet security with the Norton Firewall
turned on and Windows firewall turned off
The firewall is turned on on the router

Both PCs work perfectly and both can access the internet independently of
each other.

However, I have tried everything to get theses two PCs to see each other but
they will not.

I've used the Network Setup Wizard on both PCs. I've named them both
(differently of course) and I've set the workgroup name as MYNET, but when I
go to my network places I can't see the other PC. Am I using the wizard
correctly? It seems odd. I run the wizard on the first PC, configure it and
save to a USB device. I then go to the second PC and run the netsetup.exe
file from the USB device. But, all that seems to do is run the network
wizard again. It goes through the setup exactly as it did the first time and
does not pick up the workgroup name I've specified on the first PC (it shows
MSHOME, which I then change to MYNET). Its exactly as if I'd just run the
network wizard from the control panel?! When I've finished it asks me if I
want to save to the USB device (where I've just run this from!), and then it
tells me to go and run it on any other computers I want on the network. I
could go round in circles all day!

I've tried not doing that, doing that, doing it with the firewalls turned
off. Everything I can think of. Both PCs are using the same workgroup now
but neither PC can see the other.

Worse, on the XP Home PC, when I try to look at MYNET in my network places I
get (after about 30 seconds of egg timer) an error message - MYNET is not
accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available.

The XP Pro PC goes straight into the MYNET workgroup but can only see itself
and its shared folders.

What am I doing wrong? AGGGGGGGHhhhhhhhh!!!

turn all that shit off and reboot for a start.

Do the PCs have the same WORKGROUP name and different computer names
(look at Properties of My Computer), is guest access enabled or a
common username/password exists on both, what are the IP addresses -
can they ping each other - is "enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP " set to
"on" on both of the relevant network connections and have you shared
something on each.

Putting \\compname into the Run box of Start should allow you to see
what's on that machnie from the other.

Does each network connection have "Client for MS Networks" and "File
and Printer Sharing for MS Networks" as well as TCP/IP

Can you even ping the other PC?

1. At one PC, Start | Run, cmd (or command if it's Win9x)

2. ipconfig - you're looking for the value of "IP Address"

3. At the other PC, Start | Run, cmd (or command if it's Win9x)

4. ping 192.168.1.1 (or whatever the first PC's IP address is)

5. Do the same from the second PC to the first.

Also, try \\192.168.1.1 (or whatever) instead of \\compname - this will
bypass the WINS or DNS name resolution in case that is at fault.

Thanks guys, I am now sorted. All working fine.

I had to do two things.

1. I had to disable 'Block anonymous internet requests', which was enabled
by default. I found a post in a newsgroup about that and it worked!

2. I had to map the drive in 'My computer'. (Thanks Phil). You may laugh
that I didn't know that but I'm not a network person and you only know if
someone tells you. In none of the articles I've read does it say anything
about mapping a network drive. I've just reread 'Absolute Beginner's Guide
to Home Networking ' and I can't find it in there either! I've also set up a
network printer. Now I can see the principle, it's easy (now anonymous
internet requests are allowed).

Anyway, thanks again.

Carl

NB. The router firewall and Norton Firewalls are on and working fine.

That's strange!

Drive mapping should only be necessary for old type programs that don't
understand Windows native UNC path names, like old DOS & W4WG programmes.

The anonymous requests sound more like the problem, but I thought you tried
to stop all firewall activity?

Anyway glad to here you got it sorted.

Graham.
