Hi I am having trouble with a wireless link on a Win98 computer. I can see
my other computers but cannot see the internet. System is:

DSL Modem to SMC 4-port router (DHCP server)
1 port connected to Trendnet wireless access point (disabled DHCP server)
3 ports connected to wired network
USB 802.11b Gigafast wireless adapter
All IP addresses are automatically obtained.
Mixture of WinXp, Win2K and Win98 machines
Running TCPIP, and IPX so that Win98 machines properly network with WinXP
machines.

The USB adapter works fine on other computers in the house including a Win2K
laptop and another Win98 machine. All computers also work with my wired
network.

However, on one particular Win98 laptop ("computer 1") I cannot see the
internet when using the USB adapter, but it can see the internal network. It
is fine with its wired network card.

I double-checked by going to a public (restaurant) Hotspot and likewise I
could not access the internet with the Win98 laptop, but could when I used
another business laptop with Win2K, using the same USB wireless adapter. So
the problem does not seem to be my router and home setup but something in
"computer 1" itself.

I have tried removing and re-installing Winsock and Winsock2.

I'm at a total loss as to how to solve this. Please help!!!

Thanks, ..Roger

Try setting the Gateway IP manually ?
Upgrade to Win98SE ?

The only thing I can suggest is to put a packet sniffer on the machine and
see if packets are even leaving the machine and review the packets when
using a good connection as opposed to the bad connection.

Ethereal is a free packet sniffer (use Google).
