Hi , I have a laptop and a desktop both running on XP

I have run the wizards for setting up a home office, i've tried setting up
ICS and nothing really happens.

I am using an RJ 45 cable for linking the 2 together.

OK I know there is a connection there cos'

when I plug in the RJ45 I get a lan connected balloon come up, Local Area
Connection Status
reads connected 100.0Mbps.( TCP/IP is installed).
I have pinged from both computers but there is no reply. Only time out.

I have tried mapping the network drive, I get the drive letters but thats
all.

I''ve searched for the other computer, with both comps, using the correct
name and workgroup

but I get what seems like an authority block.
How can I authorise each computer for file sharing with each other?

Help would be appreciated thanks..........

Are you using name or IP addresses when you ping?

Do you have any firewall software running, if so turn it off and try
again.

Is this a plain RJ45 cable? If so, this is your problem - you must have
a crossover cable if you're going to have a single 1-to-1 link between
the PCs.

That doesn't mean that you have a working connection - it simply means
that Windows has detected that you've plugged the cable in to something.

Hi thanks for replying so quickly.....

I've tried pinging with both name of my laptop and address
I have Norton Security running and windows firewall selected for file
sharing,
surely I can't use ics with no firewall.
Ics doesn't work properly anyway, its not connecting enough to do anything
although it
does read connected

It's not a good idea if your system is connected to the Internet. But
you need to find out whether the firewall is causing the problem. Unplug
your system from the Internet, switch off the firewall and then try the
ping test. If it works then the problem is in your firewall settings.

Use a crossed wired patch-cable.

Very cheap from B&Q Warehouse, various lengths available.
