Well, I called Orinoco tech support and they were REALLY helpful and
nice. They sent me a word doc on how to do a force reload. I guess the
one on their web site isn't complete. The part about the temporary IP is
not in any of their web docs and that was the one that threw me off. So
I am just cutting and pasting the instructions without the pics. If you
want the word doc with the pics, I may put it on a web site if ppl ask.
So, here is is.............................thanx Orinoco tech
support!!!!:

ORiNOCO/WAVELAN Access Point
(AP-1000 & WP-II)
Forced Reload Process
This document is intended to guide you screen by screen through a
forced reload of the firmware on an AP/WP-II. The software used is part
of the WPAP64 download from the
www.orinocowireless.com web site. This
document is applicable for both the older
WavePoint II series products, as well as the newer ORiNOCO series
products.
In order for a forced reload to be completed on an Access Point (AP)
unit, the unit first has to be set in a forced reload state by pressing
the ‘RESET’ and ‘RELOAD’ buttons on the front of the unit in a specific
order. The proper order to set the OR unit into a forced reload state
is described below.
WavePoint II style unit (Model #: WavePOINT-II):
Press the ‘RESET’ button quickly. The lights on the unit will flash and
start to cycle. After five seconds, the light on PC Card Slot A will
turn Red. At this point, press and hold the ‘RELOAD’ button for exactly
thirty seconds. During the thirty seconds, the lights will flash and
cycle. This is normal. After the thirty seconds is up, the power light
should be Amber/Orange. The unit is now in a forced reload state.
ORiNOCO style unit (Model #: WP-II E):
Press the ‘RESET’ button quickly. The lights on the unit will flash and
start to cycle. After three seconds, the light on PC Card Slot B will
turn Red. At this point, press and hold the ‘RELOAD’ button for exactly
thirty seconds. During the thirty seconds, the lights will flash and
cycle. This is normal. After the thirty seconds is up, the power light
should be Amber/Orange. The unit is now in a forced reload state.
Cabling:
The AP units need to be connected directly to a computer via a crossover
cable or through a hub with two straight-through cables. If you are
using the straight-through cable and hub connection, you should only
have the AP unit and the computer from which you are performing the
reload connected to the hub. If there is any other traffic on the hub,
there is a chance that the forced reload process will not complete
properly and you will have to restart the procedure.
Operating Systems:
If the customer is using Windows NT or Windows 2000, they need to be
logged in as the ‘ADMINISTRATOR’ of the computer. Being logged in as a
regular User or a User with ‘ADMIN’ privileges does not grant sufficient
access rights to the computer.
IP Addresses:
The computer that the forced reload is performed from needs to have a
static IP address for the duration of the forced reload procedure. It
is recommended that you specify a static IP address in the range that
you want to use so that there is less to configure after the firmware
has been reloaded onto the unit.
Firmware:
The firmware files that are uploaded to the AP units are in a binary
(*.bin) format. Whenever you upload a *.bin file to an AP unit, the
upload process writes information back to the firmware file that is
stored on the computer. This, in effect, renders the firmware file
useless for any further uploads. To remedy this, find the firmware file
and place a copy of it on the desktop and use the copy on the desktop
when performing the upload. Do this every time you are force reloading
an AP unit ensuring you have a “clean” *.bin file.
Open the AP Manager. If the computer is properly connected to the
Access Point (AP) and the AP has been properly put into the Forced
Reload state, you should see the AP listed with a 153.69.254.254 IP
Address and a status of ‘Forced Reload’.
Click on “Access Point” then “Upload Software”.
A window will open allowing you to choose which firmware (*.bin) file
you want to upload.
Click on the name of the *.bin file you wish to upload and then click
the “Open” button.
A window will open up asking whether or not you would like to import a
configuration (*.cnf) file with the firmware file. If you do not have a
saved custom *.cnf file, click the “No” button.
You will be asked to confirm how the firmware file is configured before
it is uploaded to the AP unit. Click the “OK” button.
These are the various tabs that you can choose from to configure the AP
unit. It is recommended that you wait until the firmware file is
uploaded before configuring the AP unit. Click on the ‘Access Point IP’
tab.
On the Access Point IP Tab, Click on the ‘Specify an IP Address’ option.
Enter in a Static IP Address in the same range that your computer is
currently in. Click the “Upload” button when you are done entering in
the IP Address.
You will be presented with a window asking for an IP Address to assign
to the AP unit. This is a temporary IP address that is only used for
uploading the firmware to the AP unit. Type in an IP Address one value
higher than you specified on the Access Point IP tab.
Once you have entered in the temporary IP address, click the “OK”
button.
You will receive this message while the AP is being uploaded with the
firmware.
Once the firmware upload is complete, the AP unit will start rebooting
and you will receive the above message. Click the “OK” button.
Once the AP has finished rebooting, you should now see the Static IP
Address reflected in the IP Address section and the unit will have a
status of ‘Online’.
To configure the AP unit, click the “Edit” button. You will be asked
for the password to configure the unit. The default password is always
‘public’.
You will be presented with the various tabs for configuring the AP unit.
Once you have finished making all the changes you want, click the “OK”
button.
Click “Yes” to upload the configuration change to the AP unit. Click
“NO” to be returned to the configuration tabs.
Once the configuration has been uploaded, the AP unit will start to
reboot and you will receive the above message. Click “OK”.
