Hi

We have windows 2000 DC and 40 clients connected to the server. We use AVG
antivirus software for virus protection. The problem is our network
performance is very poor. I checked for malicious software running in the
backend, but nothing is there. I checked ping report TTL is 10ms.

Please guide me

Thanks

It could be a Billion things. It may not even have anything to do with the
computers at all,..could be bad cabling job,...running cable over flouresant
lights, or running them over heavy electrical cables. Could be shoddy
termination at the cable ends. The list goes on and on and on and on.

Using ping won't verify if / where you have a network botteneck.

Ping is really used for connectivity purposes.

It should be easy to identify the issue that you are having due to the size
of your network, but you need to provide more information.

What are you using as your network infrastructure?

Is everything running slow or just certain machine?

Well what is "slow". Is it, slow opening file on a shared resource type of
slow?
Internet speeds seem slow. Please go into detail.

Do some low level tests from your workstations.
Ping, Pathping, Trace Routes, (tracert).
Check your DNS with nslookup to make sure your domains dns is working
correctly.
Check your Domain Controller.

If your running a Domain then all workstations need to get their IP from a
Active Directory DNS Server.
If you can post the results from your test.

1. ping yahoo.com
2. ping what ever your gateway address it (To get that address type
ipconfig /all at the command window).
Do the same as above with pathping and tracert

Also to get down to the physical side of things:

1. About how far is it from a workstation to a network switch or hub
(hubs are nasty, so I hope you have a switch).
2. How fast is your network switch or hub (again, the year is 2006, so I
hope you don't have a hub).
3. What are the NIC's in each workstation NIC (Network Card). Again its
2006 so I am hoping you have 10/100 Base Cards installed.
4. Is this something that just started happening in the pass few weeks,
Or have you always had this "slow" feeling going on. If this is new. What
changed about your network equipment / software etc...
5 Can you packet sniff your network for any viruses that may be
broadcasting and using up all of your bandwidth.

Good luck.

First of all I want to thanks everyone for the support they provided. I
checked every thing thoroughly as per your guidance and traced the problem.
We use CAT 5 cable, DLINK routers, CISCO router and Linksys Ethernet Switch.
Our basic requirement is VSS. When I connect DLINK DI 804 HV router, problem
starts. Network start slowdown and users unable to get the latest version
from the VSS. When I disconnect the DLINK router, everything goes normally.
I don't understand why it happens but I am able to figure out the hardware
which is creating problem.

Thanks
