Hello everyone

I have a Netgear RT311 router and a Netgear FS105 switch with a cable modem
hooked up to 2 machines (1 laptop and 1 desktop).

The internet connection is working fine.
Also, I can see both machines in Network Neighborhood BUT cannot gain
access.

File and Print sharing is enabled but I cannot map a drive for either
computer.

Can anyone help and do you need more info??

TIA

JE Ross

Please reply to this message in the news group (not by E-mail) with
more information to help other people understand the problem.

What does "cannot gain access" mean? How are you trying to gain
access? What exactly happens when you do it? If there's an error
message, what does it say?

What version of Windows does each machine have?

this may sound silly BUT..."file and printer sharing is enabled" ...so did
you actually "share" the drive you want to access?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for responding so quickly.

I've hooked up a network (Netgear RT311 router and FS105 switch) between 2
old computers, both using 98SE. From computer A, I'm trying to access files
(read, write, print, etc.}on computer B and the reverse. Again, both have
Internet and Mail access with no problems.

When I hit Tools\Map Network Drive in Windows Explorer, neither computer is
listed in the drop down (even though I can see both in the directory under
Network Neighborhood).. Then, if I type in the name of the other computer,
I get the following error message:

"The following error occurred while trying to connect E: to
\\"computername." The cmputer or sharename could not be found. Make sure
you typed it correctly, and try again.".

Sooo, how do I get these 2 computers to "talk" to each other??

Thanks for responding.

JE Ross

Hi Haggis

Please forgive the delay in responding. You hit it right on the mark.

Boy, do I feel dumb but I knew it was something simple.

Thanks
