Hi,

In need some help setting up my Netgear MR814v2 wireless router and my DLink
DSL-300+ ADSL modem on a WinXP Home SP1 desktop.

The problem is that the router and the modem work fine when they are plugged
separately into the computers NIC, but if I plug the modem into the router I
cant get internet access or check the routers settings at
http://192.168.0.1.

Both the router and the modem acknowledge each other and all the indicators
light up, so a hardware issue can be disregarded.

The cabling has been configured correctly with a crossover cable supplied by
netgear going from the routers LAN port to the desktop computers NIC, and a
network cable going from the routers WAN to the ADSL modem. I dont think
cabling is a problem since these two work fine when they are not connected
into each other.

In terms of windows configuration, I dont think that is a problem either.
TCP/IP and client for microsft networks is configured and the windows
firewall (under adapter) and norton antivirus and firewall are also
disabled.

A network connection under WinXP is operational and the IP of the desktop is
192.168.0.2, with the gateway of 192.168.0.1, and a sub net of
255.255.255.0. So it seems that Im getting a correct LAN connection between
the desktop and the router.

Ive tried the configuration with a laptop containing a fresh install of
WinXP Home with the same problems.

I think the problem lies somewhere In between the modem and the router but I
cant figure it out. They dont seem to be communicating properly and this is
where I need some help.

All replies in regard to solving this matter would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Eyman

Hi,

Ive followed the netgear instructions as detailed in my original post.
Ive also tested the setup with different cables which I should have
mentioned as well. these are detailed below as reponses to your post.

Thanks

Eyman

The netgear packaging states that this is a CAT5 cable I might have gotr it
wrong. Ive also used a straight cable in this connection to no avail.

Ive tried a cross over cable here as well to no avail.

Bill,

I can access the router without the modem and have setup my information
within the routers configuration. I get the same problem though, the router
wont connect through the modem to the internet or 192.168.0.1. Please note
that the modems configuration (login, password, and connection type) have
been cleared so only the router contains the information.

Thanks

Eyman

It's really academic anyhow. If you can administer the router from the PC
then it has nothing to do with your problem.

Eyman, I'm no expert at networking, but I have the same modem and had
similar problems. I had to change the IP address on my router as 192.168.0.1
was default for both router and modem. You cannot alter this on the 300+
modem, so be careful to change everything else away from it.

This isn't an answer to your problem but there's obviously an issue with the
modem;

hi and thanks for the response.
that was the problem.
both the modem and the router have default ip's of 192.168.0.1, however you
cant change the ip of the modem.
i changed the ip of the router to 192.168.0.2, put the modem in bridged mode
and all is well.
thanks for the responses.
