Help Needed - Domain Change Issue

Issue #1
Recently, IT changed domain names at our organization. Some of our
workstations automatically updated the domain as an option within the domain
name dropdown box on the Windows client logon screen. However, a couple of
the workstations did not automatically update and thus, the new domain is
not an option from the logon screen making it impossible to gain access to
the network.

Question
Can the new domain be defined at the client workstation within the operating
system (OS) software or does it have to be defined at the server (e.g., DNS
and/or Active Directory)?

Will await your reply.
Thank you!!

TVGuy

Yes, just log in as an administrator (locally or using cached credentials to
the old domain), remove the workstation from the old domain (it'll probably
give you a message about being unable to contact the domain controller, then
reboot. Login again as the local administrator, and add the workstation to
the domain like you would normally.

That's the quick and dirty way as the users (most likely) won't have their
normal desktop or e-mail or other settings. From there you just go into
C:\Documents and Settings\username and copy what you need to C:\Documents
and Settings\username.newdomain - it's not like you change domain names
every week (at least I hope not) so this is only a one time thing.

I would be interested to learn if there /is/ a way to automagically change
the domain so it recognizes the profiles... Anyone know how?

The Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) will do this but both Domains
must be active and running for it to work. I have heard of other "profile
tools" that let you save and move profiles, but I can't think of any by name
right now.

The Norton Ghost Console will move profiles from one machine to another, and
I think it can even backup and restore profiles, if the machines have the
Console Client installed. I've only used it once or twice so I'm a little
unsure of the gory dteails of what it can do.

You can also use the profile copy utility in Windows as well. Right-click
on MyComputer, selct Properties, Select UserProfiles. You can copy one
profile to another here as long as you have Admin privledges and neither of
the profiles you are working with is the currently logged in one, because if
worn't work properly if files are in use.
