Really? You call it the best overall deal when:

1. It's none standard.
2. It's 18% more expensive than better alternatives..
3. It's 25% slower than better and cheaper alternatives.
4. It's 20% less reliable than better and cheaper alternatives.
5. It locks you in for 12 months.

I really would suggest that you have a look at:
http://www.adslguide.org/isps/compare.asp

Though I suppose it's a bit late now.

It intrigues me why you are using Freeserve - is AOL that bad?

What on earth has area got to do with it? AOL use BT like everyone else
for ADSL in the UK.

There have been posts here and elsewhere about the difficulty with AOL
and wireless because of (1) above. Try doing a Google.

See if AOL will change your USB modem for a Ethernet one, then buy a
wireless router.

You might have to wait until it breakes down :-(

Could he get a cheap old system (sys 1), slap in a USB card and an ethernet
card, run the DSL onto the USB for sys 1, run ethernet out of sys 1 into his
wireles router, and connect whatever he wants to the router?

The number of times i have spoken to people and the conversation has
gone towards broadband and they've said "I can't really afford it!" and
then they quote the BT Openworld price.

I say, "well don't use BT then!" to which they reply "but what else can
I do, I have a BT line!".

What does a washed brain look like? Is it whiter if washed in Arial?

David.

Clearly someone with a brain that's incapable of driving their fingies,
to drive their keyboard, which drives their 'puter, to access:

I've a neighbour who went AOL against my advice (I suggested Pipex's
Solo). I also suggested he runs DU Meter (which he does). He now keeps
coming round to me wringing his hands about his speed and dropped
connections.

The ironic thing is that this guy was an IT teacher for four years
before he retired a year ago. Sort of says it all :-)
