Hi all,

I have a strange and irritating problem with a Linksys WPC54G card in
my notebook (Thinkpad A30, Win2K).
I originally installed it witout a glitch, as part of an Adhoc network
with another Linksys 54G PCI card in a desktop. It worked like a charm
during a few days, except for a minor glitch (on both machines,
"Signal strength" and "Link quality" meters did not work in the WLAN
Monitor utility). As a matter of fact, I had the feeling network
transfers were faster than on the Ethernet NIC...

Now, I don't know what happened but all I get is a "Network cable
unplugged " message above the LAN icon in the task bar, and the WLAN
Monitor utility says the card is inactive. The strange thing is, the
Device manager "sees" the card and everything seems to be OK in there.

I reinstalled the whole driver and software set after making sure
previous entries in the registry were deleted, I reinstalled Win2K and
SP3, but to no avail...

In order to make sure this was not a PCMCIA hardware/software failure,
and since my computer has a dual boot, I booted under Win98 and
installed the card: it works like a charm... But unfortunately using
W98 is not an option.

And to make even more sure the card itself was not failing, I used
another WPC54G I have here for another notebook: still the same
result... The Power LED lights on, that's all.

I also installed Network Stumbler and Boingo, they both give the same
result as Linksys WLAN Monitor: they don't "find" the card.

I checked the event log: at startup, no error, no event related to
this. If I inhibit then reactivate the wireless network, I get the
error msg: "Server could not bind to transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{591C0EA5-62B1-4FCC-8BD3-F3B9066F9D3E}" (this is
my card ID).

So, to summarize,
- Device Manager reports the interface card as OK,
- WLAN Monitor says "WPC54G inactive", and the "Connect" and "Refresh"
buttons are greyed out. Also, the usual animation showing it is
searching for an available network does not appear,
- The card's MAC address does not seem to be retrievable,
- If I try to alter settings in the TCP/IP section of the WLAN
Monitor, I get a "Failed to apply settings" at the end. Same operation
in the local network connection does not produce such a message but
these new settings are not applied: it's really like if the card, or
rather the "cable" part of it, was not there.

Thanks for any help,

Patrick

Hi !

Have you tried to instal Netstumbler by any chance ?!

In fact I did this evening and since that, my WPC54G is stated
"inactive"...

Tips & how to at: http://www.mnetweb.co.uk/linksys

Thanks to Miles_B who set up this page and posted it in

Linksys :-)

Will give it a try as soon as I've calmed down ;-))

Hoping this will help you,
Michel
