For my cable internet connection, I just installed a Linsys WRT54G
Wireless-G Broadband Router and a Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter.
The router is connected to a Windows XP Pro PC and the wireless USB adapter
to a Windows 2000 Pro PC.

There are some problems so far:

1. On this Windows XP Pro PC connected to the router (wired, not wireless),
with Outlook Express 6 (where I am typing right now), I can't send/receive
email anymore. I keep getting the error "The host 'pop' could not be found".
I guess, with the wireless router installed, I have to change the email
smtp/pop settings to something else? Currently, for my cable internet access
account,
I have Incoming POP3 set as "pop" and outgoing SMTP set as "smtp", and it
worked with no problem until I installed this wireles router.

2. On the Windows 2000 Pro PC connected to the wireless USB network adapter,
everytime I reboot the PC, there is no connection at all until I click the
linksys status icon on the windows taskbar and then click connect and it
THEN usually takes a few (2 or 3 minutes) before it gets connected (ie,
found the wireless signal). So it's not always on but needs a connecting
process everytime the PC is rebooted. Is this normal?

3. On this XP Pro PC connected to the router, with Internet Explorer set at
http://192.168.1.1/ to configure the router, I can't find the option/tap to
enable/disable WEP?

Thanks in advance,
James

1. In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings for your wireless adapter, there is a DNS
option for appending the primary, parent, and connection specific suffixes.
Enable those. You may also need to specify a DNS suffix for the wireless
connection. The reason that 'pop' could not be found is that 'pop' did not
get converted into something like pop.myisp.com. Alternatively, you could
just rename pop and smtp to the full address specified by your ISP.

2. That does not sound quite normal. Are there other access points in the
area?

3. The option would be found somewhere related to wireless security (depends
on the firmware revision). The options should be something like no
encryption, WEP, RADIUS, WPA-PSK, and WPA. WPA-PSK is much stronger than
WEP but the USB network adapter may not support WPA (yet?).

Yves,

Thanks for your info. #1 and #3 solved so far. Now #2 still remains (that
is, everytime I reboot the PC with the wireless USB network adapter, there
is no connection, I have to click the connect icon and wait for about 2 to 3
minutes before it finally gets connected!"

There's a patch you need from Microsoft's web site for XP which will reduce
the connection time to 10-15 seconds.
