for my broadband service, do i still then have to pay for the time i'm
online to bt on my bill. i.e. if im on for half hour, will i get billed 30p
by bt for the time i'm online? sorry to sound a bit dim on this subject but

No.
You'r permenantly connected, there is no per-hour charge.

Only the line-rental and ISP fee.

It is possible to have a broadband Modem, and a dial up
co-existing,(With matching Dial up connection settings)
As long as you are using the Correct dial up settings, you are not
using the other so will not be charged (As has already been said)
There is no monthly charge for a PAYG dial up account, so you should
be OK on that front as well.
