Hi all.
I've been trying for 3 days to get 2 pc's to share the internet.
I have 2 x 802.11b WLAN mini USB adapters and I can share files and the
printer without problem.
What I can't seem to do is access the internet from the 2nd machine.

I have XP on both and have selected to share the modem but nothing happens

I have spent a day on different web pages but can't find anything recent or
anything that works.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated but please keep it simple. It took
me ages just to get the 2 PC's to share files!
Thanks,
James

what are the IP addresses of the two machines.

what are the "default gateway" and DNS settings of the one without the
net connection - you didn't mention your OS but ipconfig /all from
windows command prompt will show it, winipcfg on older versions or
look at properties of TCP/IP on connection icons (right mouise etc).

did you do the thing where you make a floppy on the "master" where you
set up ICS and insert that in t'other machine ?

Thanks for the reply Phil. Unfortunately, I don't know where to get the info
you request.

I did make a floppy using new network connection but that didn't work out as
there's a '1394 Net adapter' on the laptop which I did have disabled but
after using the floppy that the 1st machine made, it incorporated it into a
bridge. I couldn't even share files then. The laptop network card is of no
use since I cannot connect it

The IP address changes everytime I boot up.
The default gateway and dns settings are checked as obtain automatically.
The OS is XP home on both machines.
If I printed all the info from ipconfig/all from both machines, would that
give you any idea what I have done wrong?
Oh, is the information safe to print on a newsgroup?
Thanks again,
James

You run ipconfig on the remote (non-modem) PC as follows:

1. Start | Run | command for Win9x
or
1. Start | Run | cmd for Win2K or WinXP

2. At the c:\ prompt, run
ipconfig /all

3. The IP address should be 192.168.0.x, where x is between 2 and 254 (x=1
is reserved for the LAN adapter of the PC that has the modem)

4. The default gateway and DHCP server addresses should be 192.168.0.1 (ie
the address of the modem PC).

5. Repeat (1) on the modem PC: the IP address of the LAN adapter should be
192.168.0.1.

6. At the non-modem PC, still in the command/cmd prompt, run
ping 192.168.0.1
and make sure you get four lines saying "Reply from..."

7. At the modem PC, in the command/cmd prompt, run
ping 192.169.0.x (as quoted in Step 3)
and make sure you get the "Reply from..." lines.

These steps will confirm that you are getting connectivity between the two
PCs over the LAN.

Assuming all this works:

8. At the non-modem PC, run
ping news.bbc.co.uk
You should get "Reply from 212.58.226.40"

9. If this fails, try
ping 212.58.226.40

You results may differ slightly from mine, since your non-modem PC is XP
whereas mine is Win98, but I'd expect them to agree pretty closely.

If anything doesn't work, post the output of ipconfig /all from the modem
and non-modem PCs - there's nothing in there which will allow hackers to
access your PC, so it's safe to post them!

Very simple just ditch ics and load a freeware proxy server on the PC
connected to the internet. Use static IPs on the internal network (you
will have to make entires in the lmhosts file on each machine for name
resolution for local file/pronter sharing) and point the "other" PCs
browsers internet connection setting to use the the PC with the modem as
the proxy server.

For proxy servers consider AnalogX Proxy (very simple designed as an
internet sharing proxy) or Proxomitron (a filtering Proxy it requires a
couple of setting changed to act as a sharingproxy)

And, how do you do that with Proxomitron? I'd be very interested,
since I cannot use ICS with free Kerio 4

Freeware - TCP/IP - Proxy Server -
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/network/fwproxy.html

Also check Proxy Server under Shareware -

Proxomitron --- Under Config menu -- Access submenu -- tick allow
access to the following IP Address range. Then set start and end ips
of allowed range.

Becuase of all the extra features Kerio 4 is a bit iffy at least the
last late beta I tried was better to use Kerio 2.1.x which can be found
at http://www.computercops.biz
