Hi,

I need some advice. Either a solution or even someone who can point me
toward a website.

I have a Win98 machine with files that I want to access wirelessly. The
Win98 machine is connected via wire to a Linksys Router / Access Point with
a 4 port built-in hub. It is connected to the Internet via a cable modem
that is attached to the WAP.

I am trying to access the Win98 machine via a Compaq Presario with a
Wireless NIC built-in, and a Sony Vaio desktop with a D-Link USB NIC
attached. No matter what, I cannot see the Win98 machine.

I can xfer files between the Sony and the Compaq, which both use Win XP
Home. I have two total Win 98 machines, everything connects wirelesslessly
except the primary machine, which is the "host" for the needed files.

All computers can see the Internet, so the wireless seems to be set up
properly. All use dynamic IP addresses assigned automatically.

I have only tried to set up the file / printer sharing today, so the setup
has never worked yet. Although the Win98 machine does use At Guard
(software firewall), it is disabled.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need additional
configuration information.

Thanks,

KLM

I wonder if the problem machine has the same domain as the others? When you
try to see it, do you browse thru Windows Explorer - Entire Network,
Microsoft Windows Network, and then see the workgroup name.

Also it could be settings at the file sharing definitions for the Win98
machine. Check to make sure:

1)"File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" - check Control Panel -
Networking. It is a client you may need to add.

2) Open Windows Explorer. Right click on a drive or directory you want to
share. Select "sharing". Click "shared as" and enter a name you want to
use for this drive or directory. Also specify the "access type" you want to
give out. You can also set up a password. [Note you can't do passwords on
Win XP Home but can with XP Pro.]

Probably need to reboot.

Good luck.

If I understand correctly, the Win98 box in question sits behind a NAT
router (the Linksys) and the other PC's are on a LAN that is actually on
the WAN side of that NAT router.

In a standard configuration, your wireless PC's should NOT be able to
see the Win98 box.

If your Linksys NAT router has a DMZ or port forwarding feature, you
should be able to configure it to make that Win98 box visible, but IMHO,
this is more trouble than its worth, and presents a serious security
risk. Why not just set things up so that the machines that need to talk
to each other on a peer-peer basis are on the same subnet?

Hi,

The Win 98 Box is attached directly to the router in Port 1, the other
machices connect directly to the router wirelessly. Again, the 2 XP
machines can see each other...

Bob,

The workgroup name is the same on all - is that what you mean? I have
already added File and Printer sharing, and set up the invidual shares...

Thanks for your response,

K

For each machine, open a cmd window and type "ipconfig". All interfaces
connected to the router should have addresses on the same IP subnet (be sure
they have the same subnet masks). They should all have same IP address for
gateway and for DNS server. If any of this is wrong, then somehow the Win98
machine may have been assigned to a different subnet than the others (I
assume it gets an address and a subnet, since you say it can reach the
internet, just not the two wireless hosts). You then need to either figure
out why that is, or manually configure the Win98 with static IP addresses to
be on the same subnet. Are you sure the router is assigning the IP address
to the Win98, or does it configure its own subnet?

If all of the above is correct, then from the Win98 cmd window you should be
able to ping the two wireless hosts. If you cannot, it may be that the
router is not bridging the Win98's ethernet segment to the other two
wireless segments. I'm not familiar with Linksys, so I don't know if there's
a config option that governs that or not. You might also check to see if the
router has IP or MAC filtering options that might affect packet forwarding
between Ethernet and 802.11 interfaces.

If pings work, then you have network connectivity between all three hosts.
Any other network visibility problems you have at this point will be at a
higher level (ICS config, firewall, etc.).

Maybe this has been suggested, but do you have the XP firewalls turned off
on the other machines?

Gary,

Thanks for the tips - I will look into that. It has gotten more weird -
Computer 1 and 2 are Win 98, Computer 3-4 are XP. From Computer 1, I can
see nothing. From Computer 2, I can see numbers 3-4 (XP machines). From
Computer 3, I can see the other XP machine (4). From Computer 4, I can see
Computer 3 (XP).

Hopefully the IP Config will show something. And this could be a bridging
problem...

Kevin,

Many win98 to winxp peer network problems can be solved by turning off
the Browse Master service on the xp boxes.

Good luck
