Help with home crossover network

I am trying to set up a home cross over network between my PC and laptop for
file sharing, both systems are running XP.

At the moment I am able to ping both computers using their ip addesses, i
can also use the netview command successfully for both computers when using
the IP addresses, however if i use the names of the computers this command
only works from one computer.

If i search for the computers using the search box then sometimes i get no
results and sometimes it returns one or both computers. When it does return
both computers it will not let me access the networked computer, it says it
is not accessible and that i may not have access.

I'd really appreciate some help in getting my network running, if any
information is needed regarding how i have set up the network etc then
please let me know.

Many thanks

Ben

Is Windows File and Printer Sharing enabled on both machines.
Have you actually shared any resources on the machine you are trying to
connect to?
Have you checked the permissions on those resources?

Windows file and printer sharing is enabled on both machines (well i guess
they are enabled if they are listed under properties, general, "this
connection uses the following items")

I haved folders on both machines listed as shared as well as a printer on
one. When using the net view command these folders are listed.

How do I check permissions?

Thanks

Ben

Right-click on the folder, Sharing and Security ... Permissions

Easiest way to avoid permission problems is to have identical user
accounts on each machine. Also checking the Authenticate as guest ...
option in connection properties may make it easier to figure out what's
going on.

Are you running Norton antvirus?
If you are, its a known bug that requires a registry hack,
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177078
I changesd the value to 15 which solved the problem

As implausable as it sounds this cured the same problem I had

I was indeed running Norton antivirus and I have now changed the registory
but still no joy. I have follwoed all the other advise given also. My laptop
can see both computers via my network places, workgroup but the other
machine can see neither. When i try and access any files on this machine
from the laptop i get the following message

\\Host is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The network path was not found.

It looks like it does have something to do with permissions so i went to
sharing and security for one of the folders I am trying to share but nowhere
does it say permissions anywhere.

Have you enabled simple file sharing? I think that would make the
Permissions tab go away. Alternatively there might be a policy setting
that's upsetting it, but don't go changing these unless you have a good
idea of what you're doing as they can be a bugger to get right.

Look here for how to set up the network and follow the steps carefully. It
works.
