Firstly, this is my first attempt at networking, and at the moment it's just
a laptop (XP) connected to a Linksys WAG54G, with a Linksys notebook
adapter.

I've established the wired connection and am able to surf etc., but I'm
blowed if I can get the wireless connection to work. Going through the
setup wizard, I'm advised that it doesn't like the network configuration
because there's more than one connection to the internet, so advises setting
up a bridge. Is this really necessary, or can I de-install it?

The network connection icon in the task bar says the wireless connection is
unavailable. When I try to connect, it just comes up with the same connect
dialog box again.

I've de-installed and re-installed numerous times and am really going round
in circles.

Please, is there an idiot's guide to what I MUST do.

Allan

Progress!!

I changed from the default channel 11 to channel 7 and things sprang to life
straight away, although the connection was failing fairly frequently. So
I'm now on channel 13 and things seem more stable.

Is there any possible risk of interference from a cordless (not mobile)
phone?

Are any channels known to be more/less satisfactory in the UK?

Allan

Allan

Sorry I didn't get to you earlier
I had posted a long saga I had with laptop wireless card from ebuyer and
linksys wag54g router

I got the connection but not a DHCP served ip address

I found that the laptop card defaulted to channel 7
and the router to channel 11

I initially set both to 11
but when I (eventually) set both to channel 7 - hey presto - DHCP assigned
ip

Dunno about interference
There was a chat about this some time ago either on this newsgroup or
uk.comp.home-networking or alt.internet.wireless
I know I now have problems with my TV sender box.

Hi Ian

I had followed your posting and in fact was about to contact you directly
this morning but was interrupted.

On the possible interference front, I've found that my nearby cordless phone
uses 1.9 Ghz so I doubt that can be a cause. Then, I'm only a mile from an
airfield, although it's not a high tech. place (so far as we know).

Anyway, tonight, following my nose, I've again found that channel 11 (the
default) is a problem, and a couple of others. I then plodded through
channels 1 to 13, to see if any stayed up longer than any other, and was
very surprised to find that all the channels that would connect fell over
after three minutes! Very odd. I haven't found anything in the settings
that might affect that.

So, I decided to contact Linksys, but again got diverted and looked on their
knowledge base. I found an item referring to a duff MS hotfix and advising
removal of Wireless Zero Config. I've done this and I've not been
disconnected for over 73 minutes, which is a world record. Of course, it
could be a fluke. To be continued.

Thanks for your response.

Allan
