Hi, I've got the following urgent problem:

After having installed a Windows 2003 Server and integrated (or so I thought
....) into our existing mixed legacy NT/Windows 2000 domain, the DHCP and/or
DNS doesn't work correctly anymore?? I just wanted to add that new server as
a stand-alone fileserver!

The DHCP clients don't get any valid IP addresses anymore and there's the
following error message on my DNS server: "Registration of the DNS record
.... failed for the following reason: DNS operation refused" ???

It seems like the Windows 2003 server has messed everything up? How do I
remedy this? I've shutdwon the new server and restarted the old ones, but it
stil isn't working.

What can I do? The clients need the DHCP working tomorrow .....

Thanks alot!!

John

Is the DHCP Service running on Windows Server 2003 box as well? is the
Windows2000 DHCP Server authorized in Active Directory?

I haven't checked that. I've just turned it off when I noticed there were
network problems ... If DHCP started automatically on the new 2003 server,
do I need to 'formally' disable it there before the DHCP on the 2000 server
works again?

> Is the Windows 2000 DHCP Server authorized in Active Directory?

Our domain still is a mixed domain, we upgraded from NT4 to 2000 but we
couldn't switch in one time. Therefore I'm not sure about your question. I
will check though. But everything worked fine until this afternoon when I
installed the 2003 server and connected it to the network ...

Any ideas what I could try? Thanks!

I suggest you to authorized your DHCP Server(s) within your active directory
to have them work together. Have a look at the article below.

Authorizing DHCP servers; Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition:

So I should switch on the 2003 server again and then do as in this article?
But is it okay that the domain still isn't a 2003 domain?

And simply connecting a Windows 2003 server to a (mixed) Windows 2000 domain
could mess this whole DNS/DHCP thing up?

No, not at all...

Simply connecting a server (2003, 2000, BSD, whatever) that is running DHCP
when it shouldn't be can do this -- if this is indeed your problem.

Make sure that neither the DHCP server or DNS server services are running
and that they are set to disabled. Then, make sure that your 2000 server
has its DHCP service Authorized -- it probably was already as it was working
before, but still check.

If neither service is running on your 2003 box, this was not your problem.
These services do not run by default so I have a hard time understanding
either where they came from or why you'd be surprised that they're there.

So, pull this off of the 2003 box and you should be good... otherwise
direct your inquiry elsewhere.
