HELP!:DG834G router problems

I'm running a small home network based around the Netgear DG834G
wireless router. A PC and a Mac are connected via ethernet and a PC
laptop and a Mac laptop are connected via wireless. The firmware is
V.2.10.22

Right now the wireless doesn't work and I've no idea why, what caused it
to stop working or what procedures I might use to test it. This problem
is reoccurring and intermittent. I can find no pattern in the router's
behaviour. Sometimes the wireless works and sometimes it doesn't. And
I've no idea why. Neither the PC laptop, using a Prism 802.11g card, nor
the Mac, using Airport, can detect any wireless signal. It was fine two
days ago and, as far as I know, nothing has changed. This has happen a
few times before - it stops working, it starts working.

Anybody any idea what might be causing this and what I might do to
rectify the situation?

Many thanks.

This can happen when another wireless device is too close to the router.
It could be a wireless client (the Prism or the Airport) or another access
point or even a cordless phone base station. Try removing any other
wireless device to more than 3 metres from the router and see whether that
allows it to recover.

I mentioned about cordless phones to a guy I chat with on MSN who was
having the same problems. I guess that's what it ended up being.

The router is now 1.5 metres from a cordless phone base station. It
still doesn't work wirelessly. Today I'll try and move it further away.
When it was 1 metre away from the cordless phone base station it worked
fine for about 3 months, after some fiddling about upgrading firmware
etc. Why did it work, for so long, and now it doesn't?

Things fail, that's what failure means - it works for a long time,
then it doesn't.

First, temporarily switch off the cordless phone base (and then restart
the router) in order to test whether the phone's presence is the cause of
the problem with the Access Point. If doing that restores WiFi, then
proceed as you are to find better separated permanent sites for the two.

I've switched off and disconnected all cordless telephone base stations
in the house. I've changed the wireless channel on the router. I've
rebooted the router. I've completely powered down the router for 30
minutes. I've moved the router to a new location. I've done all of these
things and still no wireless signal can be detected by Airport or the
Prism wireless cards.

Maybe, for whatever reason, the wireless function on this router has
stopped functioning. The LED indicates that it is functioning, but no
wireless signal can be detected.

Any other ideas? Anyone?

Thanks to all those who've replied.

Have you reset the router by sticking a pin or something in the little
hole in the rear panel, while it's powered up? You need to hold it in
for about 30 seconds in order for the reset to take effect. A quick
stab won't do it.

This will wipe all your settings so you will need to input your ADSL
login details again as a minimum, and set up WPA, MAC etc as required.

As a straw-clutch you could also try reloading the firmware. If that
and everything you have done so far doesn't fix it then your router
may be FUBAR.

Yeah...it's broke?

All the LED does is confirm that it is enabled, and when it is
flashing, data is being transferred. It doesn't say whether a
transmittion is being sent.

Sounds grim, but maybe it's just pining for the fjords.
