After being in a black spot we have now been told we can have Broadband
(512 kbps). :O)

I am with Freeserve/Wanadoo Anytime at the moment and have been trying to
decide whether to have them as a Broadband server or to go to Pipex. The
latter gives plenty of information regarding pros and cons but Wanadoo seem
to limp behind.

I believe in asking the people who use these services. Any info you can
give would be gratefully received. I want a free modem and connection and
would be happy with a 1GB restriction.

How much "notice" would Wanadoo want if I favour Pipex? (Some people seem to
have had problems with extra payments being taken.)

My thanks in advance for your advice.

Take a look at the various forums at
http://bbs.adslguide.org as they'll give you an idea of what the users
of each ISP think (there are more there than here IMHO).

Out of those two, I would say Pipex would be a wiser choice, that's
based on the feedback I've seen on both, not on having used their
services.

Pipex will give you free connection, and supply a modem, *but* you'll
have to pay what would be the normal connection charge if you leave
within the first twelve months - personally I think that's fair, and
they do state it on their website.

If you've not had broadband before, consider getting an upcapped
package, I know peoples usage varies but 1gb isn't an awful lot, and
personally I'd sooner pay another two or three quid a month and not have
to monitor how much I download.

regards
Paul

Thank you, Paul, for the advice. I have just seen Pipex in action at my
neighbour`s and I`ve decided to go for the Solo 500 package which gives an
unlimited bandwidth quota for £23.44.

I now have to contact Wanadoo and just hope they don`t charge for two months
when I unsubscribe.

Gratefully,

Mari

Freeserve/Wanadoo don't do refunds or partial months - so you'll have to pay
up until the end of the billing month in which you want to stop. [Payment is
in advance, so you'll already have paid it!]

You don't have to tell them in advance. You may want an overlap period of a
few days - with ADSL from your new ISP, and dial-up Anytime from Wanadoo -
until you're happy that ADSL is working properly.

As soon as you *are* happy, ring up Wanadoo and cancel your Anytime
service - don't wait until the end of the billing period, or you may
overshoot and end up paying for an extra month.

When you cancel Anytime, your account will simply be downgraded to a PAYG
account. You can still keep the webspace and email addresses which go with
it, as long as you physically dial into it, using an analog modem, at least
once every 90 days. [You can send and receive emails, using your old Wanadoo
address, whilst physically logged on to your new ADSL ISP provided you set
up the account in your email client (Outlook etc.) in the right way].

No problem.

I would suggest at least look at the alternatives just so you're sure
you're making an informed choice - Zen, Nildram, Plusnet and Metronet are
all worth considering.

Also read the small print, usual common sense stuff like notice periods,
cancellation periods and charges etc..

cheers,
Paul

Yes, around the 18th of this month so the dates, i think, will work out
fine. (famous last words)

"the right way". Does this mean leave it as it is?

I see Pipex mention a free backup dial-up connection anyway.

Thanks for the information; much appreciated.

Not quite. You leave the POP server for incoming mail the same as it is at
present - but you have to point outgoing mail at new ISP's SMTP server (but
keeping the same 'from' email address as before).

In my own case:
POP Server: Before - pop.freeserve.com After - pop.freeserve.com

SMTP Server: Before smtp.freeserve.com After - relay.plus.net

Hope that makes sense!

Yes, I like clear explanations like that. Thank you.
