Hi, All.

I have mediocre understanding of computer networks and systems and was
hoping to get help on connecting a windows 98SE laptop to my network.

I'm using a NETGEAR WGR614 Wireless Router as DNS Server.

I've successfully connected a Windows XP laptop with the NETGEAR WG511
adaptor to the network with the correct SSID, Channel 11, Infrastructure
Network Mode and 128 bit encryption.

I have been unsuccessful in doing the same with a laptop loaded with Win
98SE. The card drivers are loaded. The configuration software for the card
appears to run fine. My problem is that the card seems to be continually
"scanning" all channels but never actually connects. It's odd as when the
card gets to the correct channel 11, signal strength and link quality jump
to 100% and then it disconnects and continues to scan for other channels.

I think my network protocols are set correctly. Workgroup name is correct. I
have TCP/IP loaded with NetBui (sp?) and IPX with the Client for Microsoft
Networks

Any assistance and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I suspect that the encryption settings (key length, key index, or the
actual key) are wrong on the laptop.

Once you get that working, remove NetBEUI and IPX/SPX from all
computers. Windows networks work best with just one protocol, and
TCP/IP is all you need for Internet access and file/printer sharing.

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve.

I've checked the encryption key and it matches my wireless key. I've also
actually tried setting up the wireless network w/o WEP and broadcasting my
SSID, neither of which seems to make a difference with the win98SE laptop.

Thanks in advance for any other hints.

Just a reply to my own thread. I figured out the problem and it was simply
installing the updated drivers from netgear for my card. duh.
